The US financial crisis 2008 - 2009 - key causes and their solutions

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce popisuje a hodnotí hlavní příčiny finanční krize v USA 2008 - 2009. Jejím cílem je analyzovat příčiny a řešení této krize z pohledu externí regulace (americké vládní politiky a kroků dohledových a regulačních orgánů) a interní regulace (corporate governance kótovaných společností a finančních institucí v USA). Na základě analýzy historických dat a dostupných studií ke zvolenému tématu práce potvrzuje hypotézu, že (ne)existující vládní politika v oblasti regulace finančních trhů a expanzivní monetární politika Fedu měly rozhodující vliv na rozvinutí projevů krize. S ohledem na zkoumání corporate governance (a v jeho rámci zejména pravidel odměňování) v USA práce vyvrací, že by za hlavní příčinu krize bylo možné považovat pouze jeho selhání. Práce rovněž hodnotí efekty přijatých řešení finanční krize a potvrzuje vliv krizové politiky. Práce se ve svém omezeném rozsahu snaží předložit ucelenou studii zabývající se příčinami a řešením finanční krize USA. Její přínos lze spatřovat zejména v propojení ekonomického a právního pohledu na její průběh a řešení.

Abstract:

This thesis describes and analyzes the key causes of the 2008 -- 2009 US financial crisis. The aim of the thesis is to clarify and analyze its main causes and solutions from the view of the external regulation (American government policy and steps of supervising and regulatory bodies) and the internal regulation (US public companies` and financial institutions` corporate governance). Based on the historical data and available papers and research related to this topic, the thesis verifies the hypothesis that the (non)existing government policy on regulation of the financial markets as well as the Fed`s expansive monetary policy had the key impact on the development of the crisis. Regarding the analysis of the corporate governance in US (especially the remuneration policy), the thesis disproves the hypothesis that the failure of the corporate governance is the main cause of the crisis. This thesis also evaluates the effects of adopted crisis solutions and confirms the effect of emergency policies. Within its limited extent, the thesis offers the comprehensive study on the causes and solutions of recent US financial crisis. Its benefits can be seen especially in linking economic and legal perspective of the financial crisis and its solution.
