Regionalism in Southeast Asia: ASEAN and Its Position in International Trade

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce zkoumá pozici Sdružení národů jihovýchodní Asie v mezinárodním obchodě a analyzuje, jak k dosažení lepšího postavení přispívají integrační procesy v regionu. V práci je ASEAN zkoumán jako celek, nicméně se výzkum podrobněji zaměřuje i na samotné členské státy jako Singapur, Malajsie, Thajsko, Indonésie a Vietnam vzhledem k jejich významnému postavení v rámci obchodního bloku. Práce analyzuje teritoriální a komoditní strukturu zahraničního obchodu ASEAN a popisuje, jak k tomu přispívají jednotliví členové a různé multilaterální platformy, na jejichž základě sdružení obchoduje s dalšími státy. Rozebírá se také činnost transnacionálních korporací v jihovýchodní Asii, význam obchodních dohod mezi ASEAN a jeho partnery a další formy zapojení do mezinárodního obchodního styku. Závěrem práce shrnuje výhledy do budoucna a nabízí řešení vybraných aktuálních problémů.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the position of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in international trade and analyzes how integration processes in the region contribute to achieving better positions in it. The thesis considers ASEAN as a whole, nonetheless the research focuses in more detail on such member states as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam provided their position within the trading bloc is prominent. The thesis analyzes the territorial and commodity structure of ASEAN foreign trade as well as describes the contribution of individual members and various multilateral platforms that the association uses to trade with other states. It also discusses the activities of transnational corporations in Southeast Asia, the importance of trade agreements between ASEAN and its partners, and other forms of engagement in international trade. In conclusion, the thesis summarizes outlooks for the future and offers solutions to selected topical problems.
