Gender Analysis of Czech and Slovak Hip Hop Scene

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na problematiku genderových rolí a stereotypů, jež se objevují na česko-slovenské hiphopové scéně. Práce má podobu kvalitativní studie a je založena především na analýze českých a slovenských hiphopových textů. Výchozím teoretickým rámcem je dekonstruktivistické pojetí genderu, zejména pak teorie Judith Butler, která pojímá gender jako kategorii utvářenou neustálou sociální performancí. Hip hop je zde uchopen v širším slova smyslu, tedy jako specifický životní styl. Hip hop je především mužskou hrou. Většina MC´s, DJ´s a producentů jsou muži. Ženy se v hip hopu objevují jako konzumentky, na poli hudební produkce se však vyskytují sporadicky. Hiphopová kultura je do značné míry založena na tradiční maskulinitě, jež se neodmyslitelně pojí s normativní heterosexualitou, homofobií a misogynií. Hiphopové texty vykazují tendence stylizovat muže a ženy do stereotypních genderových identit. Ženy jsou buď světice (matky) nebo děvky (sexuální objekty). Rapeři často vystupují v macho pozicích. Maskulinní identita, jenž se na macho styl váže, je - v souladu s performativní teorií Judith Butler - neustále stvrzována deklarací homofobních postojů, propagací agresivní formy hetero(sexuality) a explicitně vyjádřeného despektu k ženám. Maskulinní rétorika je rovněž přejímána některými female MC´s. Nicméně je však třeba říci, že ne všechny hiphopové texty jsou misogynní, homofobní a sexistické. Často záleží spíše na konkrétním kontextu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the issue of gender roles and stereotypes at the czech and slovak hip hop scene. This thesis has a form of qualitative study and is primary based on the analysis of the czech and slovak hip hop lyrics. Basic theoretical point is a deconstructivist conception of gender, especially a theory from Judith Butler which conceive gender as a category formed through the continual social performance. Hip hop is here seized in a larger sense, so as a specific life style. Hip hop is first of all a men´s game. Most of the DJ´s, MC´s and producents are men. Women appear in hip hop as the consumers but on the field of music production they appear sporadically. Hip hop culture is to a large extent based on the tradicional masculinity which is inherently linked with normative heterosexuality, homophobia and misogyny. Hip hop lyrics tend to stylize men and women into the stereotype gender identities. Women are either saintess (mothers) or whores (sexual objects). Rappers often act as machos. Masculine identity, which is linked with macho style, is – according to the theory of performativity from Judith Butler – continually constituted by means of declaration of homophobic positions, promotion of aggressive form of (hetero)sexuality nad explicitly expressed contempt of women. Masculine rhetoric also take over some female MC´s. Nevertheless it is necessary to say that not all hip hop lyrics is misogynistic, homophobic and sexistic. It often depends rather on the concrete context.
