Individual differences in responding to questionnaire items

Abstract:

This study focuses on relationship between tendency to think effortfully and responding to questionnaire items about attitudes. Tendency to think effortfully is represented by two variables - need for cognition and System 2 from dual-process theories, which is measured by Cognitive reflection test (Frederick, 2005). The study was set into situation, explained by the belief-sampling model (Tourangeau et al., 2000), where context effect affects the answer to attitude question. I examined whether the attitude and thoughts that lead to the attitude are affected by context effect. Context effect was found regardless of the need for cognition level. Those who scored low on cognitive reflection test were affected by context effect stronger than those who scored high, in both attitude as well as thoughts. The number of thoughts generated was independent from both cognitive variables. These findings can be interpreted within belief sampling model that those who scored low on cognitive reflection test base their attitudes on thoughts affected by context and therefore is their attitude affected by the context. Those who score high have attitude less affected by the context, because they base their attitudes on relatively context-independent thoughts.

Abstract:

V mojej práci som sa zaoberala súvislosťou prirodzenej tendencie premýšľať a odpovedania na otázky o postojoch. Tendencia premýšľať bola reprezentovaná konštruktom need for cognition a tiež Systémom 2 z dual-process teórií, ktorý bol meraný pomocou testu kognitívnej reflexie (Frederick, 2005). Výskum bol zasadený do situácie ovplyvnenia kontextom pri odpovedaní na otázku o postoji v rámci belief-sampling modelu (Tourangeau et al., 2000). Skúmala som, či postoj participantov bude ovplyvnený kontextom, a tiež či kontext ovplyvní úvahy, na ktorých svoj postoj zakladajú. Zistila som, že úroveň need for cognition priamo nesúvisí s ovplyvnením kontextom. V prípade skóre na teste kognitívnej reflexie som súvislosť našla – participanti s nízkym skóre boli efektom kontextu ovplyvnení v postoji aj smere myšlienok viac ako participanti s vysokým skóre. Počet vyprodukovaných úvah bol nezávislý na oboch premenných reprezentujúcich tendenciu premýšľať. Na základe belief-sampling modelu môžeme tieto zistenia interpretovať tak, že participanti s nízkym skóre na teste kognitívnej reflexie zakladajú svoj postoj na úvahách ovplyvnených kontextom a preto je aj ich postoj ovplyvnený kontextom. V prípade participantov s vysokým skóre nie je postoj kontextom výrazne ovplyvnený práve preto, že ich úvahy nie sú na kontexte natoľko závislé.
