The work shows the position and importance of security forces in historiography for research of development of the state and society. Through the gendarmerie topic, the work presents the situation of the Czechoslovak state during the 1918 upheaval and its effort to cope with all problems of its initial existence, primarily to maintain the state apparatus' function.
