Listening Inside the Silence. Tabooed Fields of Tension in the Essays and Plays of Lukas Bärfuss

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the essays and plays of the Swiss writer Lukas Bärfuss. In the essay part, Bärfuss' position in the literary field is examined. The focus is on his practice of self-representation, which appears primarily in his texts on literature, suicide, morality, and freedom. Special attention is also paid to his positioning in relation to discourse in various professions. In the drama part, the above-mentioned subject areas are revisited by noting that they are often taboo. The motif of silence also goes hand in hand with the discussion of taboo subjects. In order to get to the bottom of these phenomena, two procedures are used. First, this dissertation provides in-depth analyses of two plays and the forms of silence depicted in them. In the scripts for Alice's Journey to Switzerland and Twenty Thousand Pages, the focus is on two things: assisted suicide for the mentally ill, and a critique of Switzerland (especially its incomplete coming to terms with the past). In addition to these two analyses, a more detailed approach is used. From several scripts, doctor-figures are dissected and questioned with regard to their power potential. Their handling of taboo subjects and what is not said or concealed is constantly accentuated.

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se zabývá esejistickou a dramatickou tvorbou švýcarského spisovatele Lukase Bärfusse. V části věnované esejům je zkoumáno Bärfussovo postavení v literárním poli. Pozornost je zaměřena na jeho sebeprezentační praxi, kterou lze pozorovat především v textech o literatuře, sebevraždě, morálce a svobodě. Bärfussův vztah k jiným odborným diskurzům je rovněž předmětem zkoumání. V části věnované dramatům jsou výše zmíněné tematické okruhy pojednány znovu, se zvláštním zřetelem k jejich tabuizaci. Ruku v ruce s těmito tématy jde také motiv mlčení. Aby bylo možno tyto fenomény literárněvědně uchopit, jsou použity dva přístupy metody. Za prvé tato disertační práce přináší analýzu dvou divadelních her s ohledem na podoby mlčení, které jsou v nich zobrazeny. V dramatických textech Alenčina cesta do Švýcarska a Dvacet tisíc stránek se pozornost zaměřuje na asistovanou sebevraždu duševně nemocných na jedné straně a na kritiku Švýcarska na příkladu jeho neúplného vyrovnání se s minulostí na straně druhé. Kromě těchto dvou analýz je použit i podrobnější přístup. Ve vybraných hrách jsou analyzovány postavy lékařů a jejich mocenský potenciál. Přitom je kladen důraz na jejich způsob zacházení s tabuizovanými tématy, a tím pádem i na důvody toho, co záměrně neříkají nebo zamlčují.
