How Technical And Economic Factors Affect Popular Music

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vlivem technických a ekonomických faktorů na populární hudbu. K analýze hudby používáme definici vycházející z teorie Jana Mukařovského. Podle ní je hudba autonomním znakem. Tuto definici posouváme dále aplikací dvou pojmů analýzy jazyka: konotace a denotace. Popis technických faktorů začínáme výkladem o fyzikálním pojetí zvuku, abychom se mohli následně zaměřit na frekvenční charakteristiku zvukových nahrávek a jejich dynamický rozsah. Tyto a některé další veličiny sledujeme ve všech částech produkce nahrávky, tedy od pořízení záznamu ve studiu přes jeho distribuci na hudebních nosičích až po reprodukci v různých prostředích. Při reflexi ekonomických faktorů jsme se nejprve zaměřili na vztahy mezi základními aktéry nahrávacího průmyslu, abychom mohli vysvětlit okolnosti produkce hudebních nahrávek a koncertů. Dialektický vztah mezi těmito dvěma druhy produktů pak zkoušíme přiblížit pomocí pojmů ekonomické analýzy: nehmotný produkt a veřejný statek. Na závěr blíže popisujeme postavení čtyř největších nahrávacích společností, tzv. Velké čtyřky, jež mají specifickou pozici vrátných. Tato pozice jim umožňuje do velké míry rozhodnout, kteří interpreti dostanou šanci ucházet se o zájem posluchačů. Také stojí v základu obchodního modelu využívajícího hudebních hvězd coby obchodních značek, jež požívají silnou marketingovou podporu a jsou schopné mobilizovat zákazníky. Faktory popsané v předešlých částech používáme při analýze čtyř fenoménů spojených s populární hudbou. V problematice tzv. hlukových válek vidíme především důsledky vývoje hudebních nosičů. Při průzkumu druhého fenoménu se pokoušíme ukázat, že internet není nepřítelem Velké čtyřky jen svou funkcí úložiště nelegálních kopií nahrávek. Představuje revoluci v přístupu k šíření informací, která odebírá těmto firmám zmíněnou pozici vrátných. Soutěže typu Pop Idol nám slouží jako ilustrace postupů při tvorbě a propagaci hudebních hvězd. Na závěr se podíváme na pop samotný, a to v jeho nejryzejší podobě „zpívajících celebrit.“

Abstract:

The thesis addresses influences of technical and economic factors over popular music. In the first chapter we use a definition of music as “autonomous sign,” accordingly to the theory of Jan Mukarovsky. However, we supplement this approach a bit by application of two terms of semantic analysis: denotation and connotation. Description of the technical factors is started with a lecture on physical interpretation of sound. Then we aim at frequency characteristic and dynamic range of music recordings. We observe these (and some others) variables in the whole process of production of music recording. Among all, it includes studio recording, media distribution and playing in variable conditions. Reflecting the economical factors we focus on relations among the main players of the music industry. That allows us to explain some details of production of music recordings and live concerts. Besides that, we try to clarify dialectical relation between these two kinds of product using a couple of terms of economical analysis: service, public good. Then we describe a situation of the four biggest record companies known as “Big Four.” These companies have a specific position of “gatekeepers,” which enables them to choose which musicians will be given a chance to interest listeners. Moreover, this position is behind the business model using pop stars as brands consuming huge marketing support and capable to affect listeners preferences. All the factors are used for an analysis of four phenomena related to the popular music. The first phenomenon is called “Loudness Wars” and we perceive it, roughly speaking, as a consequence of the music media development. The second topic addresses copyright infringement using internet and we try to show that record companies have good reason to understand the internet as an enemy, because it is more than a device for file sharing – it changes the way of how we get information and thus it can weaken the position of “gatekeepers.” The third phenomenon concerns competitions like Pop Idol. In our point of view, it illustrates mechanisms of making and promoting “pop stars.” In the very end we investigate the fourth phenomenon, which is “pop” in its purest form of singing celebrities.
