Attitudes of young men towards gender stereotypes and perception of their own gender role

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vztahem mezi sebepojetím maskulinních rysů a konformitou k tradičním genderovým normám u mladých mužů ve věku 18-35 let. Výzkum vychází z psychologických teorií genderové identity a sebepojetí maskulinity, je zasazen do kontextu vývojového období vynořující se a mladé dospělosti, kdy je sebepojetí již dotvářeno v interakci se sociálními normami. K měření byly použity dotazníky BSRI-SF a MRNI-SF, které zjišťovaly self-reportované maskulinní a femininní rysy a míru internalizace tradiční maskulinity. Výzkum byl realizován online formou na vzorku 142 respondentů. Výsledky ukázaly statisticky významný vztah mezi sebepojetím maskulinních rysů a mírou konformity k tradiční maskulinitě. U věřících mužů se navíc projevila vyšší míra souhlasu než u nevěřících. Přestože některé hypotézy nebyly podpořeny, výzkum ukazuje, že představy o mužství nejsou mezi mladými muži homogenní. Tato zjištění poukazují na tendence k určitému rozvolňování tradičních norem, jako je flexibilnější chápání genderové identity.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to explore how young men aged 18 to 35 perceive their gender identity and to what extent they conform to traditional norms of masculinity. The research draws on psychological theories of gender identity and masculine self-concept and is situated within the developmental period of emerging and young adulthood, during which self-concept is shaped through interaction with social norms. Data were collected using the BSRI-SF and MRNI-SF questionnaires, which measured self-reported masculine and feminine traits and the degree of internalization of traditional masculinity. The study was conducted online on a sample of 142 participants. The results revealed a statistically significant relationship between masculine self-concept and conformity to traditional masculinity. Moreover, religious men showed a higher level of conformity compared to non-religious men. Although some hypotheses were not supported, the findings suggest that young men's views on masculinity are not homogeneous. These results point to a gradual shift away from rigid norms towards a more flexible understanding of gender identity.
