Contrastive analysis of presentations of political parties in the Czech Republic and English-speaking countries

Abstract:

The subject of this diploma thesis is the analysis of web presentations of political parties in the Czech Republic and English-speaking countries. A corpus is composed of texts describing political manifestos and leaders' forewords. The parties selected for the analysis include Ano 2011, the Czech Civic Democratic Party, the Czech Social Democratic Party, the Labour Party, the Conservative Party, and the Liberal Democratic Party. The theoretical background and the methods used consist of Systemic Functional Linguistics introduced by M.A.K. Halliday, Critical Discourse Analysis in the work of Norman Fairclough, Teun van Dijk's work on ideology, the evaluation framework developed by J.R. Martin and P.R.R. White, and communication strategies in the work of Christopher Hopkinson. The analysis examines communication strategies used in the construction identities of the political parties and building relationships with potential voters on the parties' websites. The main focus of the study is on differences between the two cultures in their website presentations.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na srovnání britského a českého diskurzu ve webových prezentacích politických stran. Korpus se skládá z textů obsahujících programy politických stran a z předmluvy k politickému programu napsaného lídrem strany. Politické strany zvolené k analýze jsou následující: Politické hnutí Ano 2011, Občanská demokratická strana, Česká strana sociálně demokratická, Konzervativní strana, Labouristická strana a Liberální demokraté. Teoretické předpoklady, ze kterých se vycházelo a použité metody, jsou a systémová funkční lingvistika, jejímž autorem je M.A.K. Halliday, kritická analýza diskurzu v díle Normana Fairclougha, zpracování tématu ideologie v díle Teuna van Dijka a komunikační strategie v díle Christophera Hopkinsna. Práce se zaměřuje na analýzu komunikačních strategií při vytváření identity politické strany a formování vztahu s potenciálními voliči na webových stránkách politických stran. Hlavní zaměření je pak na rozdíly politického diskurzu u těchto dvou kultur.
