Territorial Disputes of China Through the Prism of Strategic Culture

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce si klade za cíl vykreslit obraz současné strategické kultury Číny. S pomocí tohoto konceptu chce autorka pochopit postoj a postup čínského režimu při řešení dvou vybraných teritoriálních konfliktů – o podobu vzájemných hranic s Indií a o ostrovy Ťiao-ji/Senkaku s Japonskem. Časově se práce soustřeďuje na období tzv. nové diplomacie, jehož začátek autoři Medeiros a Taylor Fravel (2003) datují do počátku 90. let 20. století. Tehdy Číňané začali po dekádách statusu quo aktivně přistupovat k řešení sporných nároků na celou řadu území. Na řešení teritoriálních sporů se práci pokusí nahlédnout optikou konceptu strategické kultury, který má pomoct pochopit a interpretovat myšlení a chování vybraných aktérů strategické kultury. Práce ve své teoretické části popisuje koncept strategické kultury, který následně aplikuje na případ Číny a jejích teritoriálních sporů. Závěr práce se pokouší nastínit i možný budoucí vývoj.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis puts a target to portray an image of current strategic culture of China. Using this concept the author wants to understand to attitudes and practices of Chinese regime when dealing with two selected territorial disputes – with border disputes with India and with the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands with Japan. Thesis focuses on the era of „New Diplomacy“, which according to Medeiros and Taylor Fravel (2003) have started in 1990s. After decades of maintaining the status quo Chinese have started to play an active role in managing disputed territorial claims. The thesis tries to look at solving of territorial disputes through the prism of concept of strategic culture that should help to understand and interpret thinking and behaviour of selected strategic culture’s actors. The theoretical part of this thesis describes the concept of strategic culture that is then applied in the case study of China and its territorial disputes. In conclusion, the work outlines also possible future development.
