Transnational Student Field: Transcending the community impermanence

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje fenoménu zahraničních pobytů univerzitních studentů. Studentskou mobilitu pojímá jako krátkodobou formu migrace a zaměřuje se na její transnacionální dimenzi. Skrze migrační zkušenost může dojít k transformaci osobnosti aktéra, především co se týče jeho identity, zvyků, postojů či strategií jednání. Podobný vliv přechodného pobytu v cizím prostředí se práce snaží ukázat i na studentech a jejich zahraniční zkušenosti. Interakce studentů na pobytu jsou zachyceny v jednotce tzv. transnacionálního studentského pole. Tato komplexní abstraktní komunita, ve které se mísí působení mnohočetných kulturních sfér - hostitelské společnosti a domácích prostředí všech jednotlivých členů - je aktéry na jedné straně konstituována, na straně druhé je všechny vzájemně formuje. Analýza hloubkových rozhovorů zachycuje, jakým způsobem studenti vnímají svoji pozici v popsaném transnacionálním poli a jaké na nich zkušenost zahraničního pobytu zanechává otisky. Výstupy výzkumu obohacují chápání pojmu transnacionalismus. Oproti běžnému pojetí interakce dvou stran (domovské a hostitelské kultury) může být skrze koncept transnacionálního studentského pole zdůrazněna také mnohočetnost směrů vlivu, kterým jsou aktér a jeho Já při migraci vystaveni.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of student exchange programs. Student mobility is viewed as a short-time form of migration and focus is oriented towards its transnational dimension. Through migration experience the transformation of actor´s personality can be observed, concerning mainly the elements of identity, practices, attitudes or agency strategies. The thesis strives to point out conformable impact of temporary visit in foreign environment on the case of university students and their experience abroad. Student interactions on the sojourn are framed by so called transnational student field. This complex abstract community mixing in its centre multiple cultural spheres - the host society and the original environment of every single of its members - is constituted of its actors on the one hand and mutually shapes them on the other hand. The analysis of in-depth interviews captures the way in which students understand their position in this transnational field and shows the imprints that the experience of sojourn abroad leaves on them. The outcomes of the research aspire to enrich the understanding of transnationalism concept. Besides the common interpretation of two side interaction (the home and the host cultures), the transnational student field concept can help emphasize the multiple directions of impacts the actor and his Self are exposed to.
