Quality of life in patient with diabetic foot ulcer

Abstract:

Objective: The main purpose of this work was to find out how diabetic ulcers affect the quality of life of diabetic patients, and what their impact is on the physical, psychological and social aspects of their lives. Methods: Data was collected using a standardized questionnaire Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale, created by Johnson & Johnson Research & Development company (Abetz et al., 2002, p. 169). It is a specific tool designed to assess the impact of diabetic ulcers and their treatment on the quality of life of diabetics. The experimental sample was represented by 100 diabetic respondents, hospitalized in the department of septic surgery. Questionnaire based investigation was carried out from August through December of 2010. Results: Analysis of the data revealed, that diabetic ulcers affect the quality of life of diabetics. Differences in the impact of diabetic ulcers on physical, psychological and social aspects of life are minimal. Despite minimal differences of the results, we found that out of these three areas, it is the physical aspect of life that is impacted the most. Conclusion: The impact of diabetic ulcers on the quality of life of diabetic patients is reflected in all areas of human existence. Although the quality of human life is quite difficult to measure, its evaluation should become an integral part of diabetic care because diabetes and its complications restrict one's daily activities, causing disbalance between what one would like to do and what he or she can or must do. Abstract:

Cieľ: Cieľom práce bolo zistiť ako ovplyvňujú diabetické ulcerácie kvalitu života diabetikov a ako vplývajú na fyzickú, psychickú a sociálnu oblasť ich života. Metodika: Údaje boli zbierané pomocou štandardizovaného dotazníka Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale vytvoreného spoločnosťou Johnson & Johnson Research & Development (Abetz et al., 2002, s. 169). Jedná sa o špecifický nástroj určený na posúdenie vplyvu diabetických ulcerácií a ich liečby na kvalitu života diabetikov. Výskumný súbor tvorilo 100 respondentov, diabetikov, hospitalizovaných na oddelení septickej chirurgie. Dotazníkové šetrenie bolo realizované v mesiacoch august - december 2010. Výsledky: Analýzou získaných údajov sme zistili, že diabetické ulcerácie vplývajú na kvalitu života diabetikov. Rozdiely vplyvu diabetických ulcerácií na fyzický, psychický stav diabetika a na sociálnu oblasť života sú minimálne. Aj napriek minimálnym rozdielom vo výsledkoch sme zistili, že z uvedených oblastí najviac pociťujú respondenti obmedzenia vyplývajúce z ulcerácii vo fyzickej oblasti ich života. Záver: Vplyv diabetických ulcerácií na kvalitu života diabetikov sa odráža vo všetkých oblastiach ľudského bytia. Aj keď sa kvalita života človeka meria pomerne ťažko, malo by byť jej zisťovanie súčasťou starostlivosti o diabetikov, pretože diabetes a jeho komplikácie obmedzujú človeka v každodenných aktivitách, zapríčiňuje nesúlad medzi tým, čo by chcel robiť a medzi tým, čo môže, či musí urobiť.
