Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá experimentálními prvky ve dvou posledních románech Angely Carter, Noci v cirkuse (1984) a Moudré děti (1991). K vysvětlení souvislostí práce obsahuje i teoretické pozadí vývoje britského románu po druhé světové válce. Angela Carter byla jednou z nejvlivnějších britských spisovatelek a její tvorba má rozsah od pohádek, přes magický realismus, feminismus až k postmoderním znázorněním minulosti. Cílem mojí práce je dokázat, že ženské postavy v těchto románech se zvládli vymanit z patriarchálních stereotypů, které nás stále obklopují. V románu Noci v cirkuse je toto dosaženo pomocí postavy Fevvers s křídly, která je symbolem nového století, ve kterém ženy nebudou připoutány k zemi a budou svobodné. Román Moudré děti je vyprávěním sedmdesátipětileté Dory Chance, která vzpomíná jak s její sestrou, dvojčetem Norou, strávily život v tančírnách v dobách, kdy „v žádné kabelce nemohl chybět pesar.“ Bohužel se narodily ´na špatné straně Temže´ a musí tvrdě bojovat o uznání jejich slavným otcem, shakespearovským hercem. V obou románech poskytují postmoderní vypravěcí techniky v kombinaci s ostatními experimentálními prvky osvobození od patriarchálních stereotypů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the experimental devices in the last two novels of Angela Carter, Nights at the Circus (1984) and Wise Children (1991). Theoretical background on development of British novel after WWII is given to explain continuity. Carter was one of the most influential British writers and her oeuvre is ranging from fairytales to magic realism, feminism and postmodern representations of the past. The aim of my thesis is to prove that the women characters from these novels managed to escape from patriarchal stereotypes, which still surround us. In Nights at the Circus this is achieved through the character of winged Fevvers as a symbol of New Woman of fin de siécle,, who won´t be bound to the ground. Wise Children is a narrative of seventy-five years old Dora Chance, reminescing how she and her twin sister Nora spent their life in music halls at the times when „pessar couldn´t be missing in any handbag“. Unfortunatelly, they were born ´on the wrong side of the Thames´ and have to fight hard for recognition of their famous father, shakespearean actor. In both novels, Carter´s postmodern narratorial technique in combination with other experimental features provide liberation from patriarchal stereotypes.
