The role and importance of university libraries in supporting the LGBTQ+ community

Abstract:

V dnešní době můžeme sledovat stále větší zájem o LGBTQ+ tématiku. Akademické knihovny v zahraničí vidí potenciál v podpoře queer komunity, jelikož se jedná o skupinu uživatelů, kteří mají velice specifické informační potřeby. V České republice však akademické knihovny nesdílejí zahraniční snahu tuto minoritní skupinu uživa-tel podpořit. Tato práce se zaměřuje na studenty a knihovny humanitních fakult Ma-sarykovy univerzity. Na základě provedených rozhovorů můžeme říci, že knihovny jsou ochotny poskytnou prostory pro akce, avšak nechtějí přímo vyzvedávat jednu uživatelskou skupinu před druhou.

Abstract:

Nowadays, we can observe a growing interest in LGBTQ+ issues. Academic libraries abroad see the potential in supporting the queer community, as this is a group of us-ers who have very specific information needs. In the Czech Republic, however, aca-demic libraries do not share the foreign efforts to support this minority user group. This paper focuses on students and libraries of the humanities faculties of Masaryk University. Based on the interviews conducted, we can say that libraries are willing to provide spaces for events, but they do not want to directly pick one user group over another.
