Mathematical constants

Abstract:

V této disertační práci lze nalézt dva různé přístupy k matematickým konstantám. První přístup, řekněme klasický, přináší v prvních třech kapitolách obsáhlý výklad ke třem významným matematickým konstantám pí, e a gama. Tyto kapitoly vycházejí z historických dokumentů, představují důkazy klíčových vlastností a výjimečnost vybraných pozoruhodných čísel a také poukazují na rozsáhlé oblasti jejich výskytu a využití. U těchto konkrétních matematických konstant odhalujeme cestu až k našemu současnému poznání, významné milníky a řadu důležitých osobností, kterým za toto poznání vděčíme. Druhý přístup, reprezentovaný poslední kapitolou, má za cíl naopak představit náš výzkum vedoucí k nalezení nových matematických konstant, a to v oblasti lineárních a pololineárních diferenciálních rovnic. V tomto výzkumu identifikujeme tzv. kritické oscilační konstanty, přičemž použité metody vycházejí z moderních technik (Riccatiho transformace a Prüferův úhel).

Abstract:

In this Ph.D. thesis one can find two different approaches to mathematical constants. The first approach (say the classic one) brings an extensive presentation of three significant mathematical constants pi, e, and gamma in the first three chapters. These chapters proceed from historical documents, present the proofs of the fundamental properties and exceptionality of the selected remarkable numbers, and also point out large areas of their occurrence and applications. At these particular mathematical constants we get to know the way up to our current knowledge, significant milestones, and a number of important personalities to whom we owe the cognition. The second approach is presented in the last chapter. Its goal is to show by contrast our research which leads to finding new mathematical constants in the field of linear and half-linear differential equations. In this research we identify the so-called critical oscillation constants, where the used methods ensue from modern techniques (the Riccati transformation and the Prüfer angle).
