Humor as Social Action in Wende Novels by Thomas Brussig

Abstract:

This thesis analyses two novels by Thomas Brussig: Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee and Helden wie wir. The focus of the study is on analysing the humorous elements of these works using an interdisciplinary approach in the field of humour. Particular attention will be paid to the reflection of the GDR environment in both novels. The humour within the novels is classified into eight types using the concept of the Comic Style Marker (CSM), ranging from lighter forms such as wit, joke, humour and nonsense to more complex forms such as satire, sarcasm, irony and cynicism. The analysis sheds light on the socio-cultural contexts in which these humorous forms appear within the novels. Finally, a comparison of the various socio-cultural contexts and the occurrence of humorous elements in both works is made in order to determine in which contexts they are most frequently found.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje dva romány Thomase Brussiga, konkrétně Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee a Helden wie wir, s hlavním zaměřením na jejich humoristické prvky prostřednictvím interdisciplinárního přístupu k studiu humoru. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována reflexi prostředí v NDR, které se v obou románech odráží. Humor v těchto dílech je klasifikován pomocí konceptu Comic Style Marker (CSM) do osmi typů, zahrnujících světlejší kategorie humoru jako wit, joke, humor a nonsens, ale i temnější formy jako jsou satira, sarkasmus, ironie a cynismus. Analytický rámec osvětluje kulturní kontexty, v nichž se tyto formy humoru v románech objevují. V závěru práce je provedeno porovnání výskytu humoristických prvků v různých kulturních kontextech obou děl s cílem identifikovat, ve kterých kontextech jsou tyto prvky nejčastěji zastoupeny.
