Neustále se zvyšující spotřeba léčiv vede také ke zvyšování jejich koncentrace v prostředí a to především ve vodních zdrojích. Léčiva tak ovlivňují i necílové organismy hlavně pak rostliny a řasy. Jakožto pseudoperzistentní polutanty, nejsou léčiva dostatečně odstraňována a transformována a tak je jejich výskyt v prostředí permanentní. The constantly increasing consumption of drugs also leads to an increase in their concentration in the environment and especially in water sources. They also affects non-target organisms, including plants and algae.
