The impact of the minimum wage on the unemployment of people with low level of education

Abstract:

Hlavní cíl této bakalářské práce představuje analýza vlivu minimální mzdy na nezaměstnanost osob s nízkým vzděláním. U této skupiny lze předpokládat převahu zaměstnání s malým finančním ohodnocením a zároveň relativně vysokou míru homogenity. Proto by její míra nezaměstnanosti měla být v porovnání s ostatními skupinami nejvíce náchylná na změny minimální mzdy. Výzkum jejích dopadů je předmětem dlouhodobého zájmu ekonomů v České republice i zahraničí. Tato práce se snaží navázat především na studie týkající se českého prostředí a vložit do tématiky nový pohled skrze zacílení na úzkou skupinu osob. Mezi její přednosti náleží také použití kvartálních dat a odhad postavený na vysokém počtu pozorování. Zahraniční a česká diskuze je shrnuta v kapitolách Zahraniční diskuze o minimální mzdě Diskuze o vlivu minimální mzdy na nezaměstnanost v České republice. Teoretická část práce rovněž popisuje základní teoretické přístupy k dané problematice a vývoj minimální mzdy v České republice v evropském kontextu.Vlastní analýza je provedena pomocí lineárně regresního modelu. Jeho finální podobu lze i přes drobné nedostatky ekonometrického charakteru považovat za relevantní. Hlavní výsledek této práce představuje zjištění, že růst minimální mzdy u zkoumané skupiny obyvatelstva nezaměstnanost snižuje. Závěr práce se snaží tuto skutečnost kritickým způsobem interpretovat, nastínit možné příčiny a zároveň naznačit další možnosti výzkumu dané problematiky.

Abstract:

The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to analyze the effects of the minimum wage on the unemployment of low educated people. In this group, we can assume the predominance of jobs with low financial reward and a relatively high degree of homogeneity of workforce, so its unemployment rate should be more prone to changes caused by minimum wage, than the unemployment of other groups.The research of minimum wage impacts is a subject of long-term interest of economists in the Czech Republic and abroad. This work tries primarily to build on the studies describing the Czech environment. This thesis tries to put a new insight into the subject by its orientation on a narrow group of people. The next advantage is the use of quarterly data and an estimate based on a high number of observations.The chapter Foreign Debate on Minimum Wage describes the most influencing foreign studies on the topic. Description of the studies from Czech environment can be found in chapter Debate on the influence of minimum wage on unemployment in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part of this thesis also describes the basic theoretical approaches to the given topis and the development of the minimum wage in the Czech Republic in the European context.The actual analysis is performed using a linear regression model. Its final form can be considered as a relevant outcome, despite some shortcomings of econometric character. The main result of this work is the finding that the growth of the minimum wage in the given population group decreases unemployment. The conclusion of the thesis tries to critically interpret this result, to outline the possible causes and at the same time to indicate other possibilities of research on the given issue.
