The potential of internet for development of learning styles of students in English lessons at a university

Abstract:

Práce spojuje pohledy na danou tematiku v následujících oblastech: styly učení v obecné rovině i v oblasti učení se jazyku, styly učení v prostředí internetu a v elektronickém prostředí a styly učení se jazyku v těchto prostředích. Tento nadhled z perspektivy nad dílčí problematikou ji odlišuje od prací, které se často pohybují pouze v jedné z nich. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na výzkum a jeho výsledky ve všech výše uvedených oblastech, který je komplikován nejednotným vymezením pojmů styl učení a kognitivní styl. Z různých obecných modelů stylů učení poskytuje poměrně plastický a relevantní pohled na učení vysokoškoláků a na faktory důležité pro rozvoj celoživotního učení model J. D. Vermunta využívající výzkumný nástroj Inventory of Learning Styles (ILS). Práce tohoto výzkumníka popisují vývoj stylů učení u univerzitních studentů, které se mění v nižších ročnících vysokoškolského studia. Jejich změny také souvisí se změnou učebního kontextu a prostředí. V oblasti angličtiny a jazyků se používané obecné modely stylů učení často zaměřují na perceptuální preference učení (model Dunnových). Existují také modely stylů učení vyvinuté pro angličtinu (model J. M. Reidové). Intenzivně se studují strategie učení. Výzkum řízení učení není příliš rozšířen. Výzkum změn stylů učení v prostředí internetu a elektronickém prostředí se opírá o obecné (např. Vermuntův) i speciálně vyvinuté modely stylů učení (CILESI). V oblasti učení se angličtiny a jazyků v prostředí internetu se výzkum orientuje spíše na jiné faktory, styly učení se zkoumají málo. Praktická část práce se zabývá výzkumem změn proměnných dotazníku ILS při použití internetových materiálů dle volby studentů (dále v anotaci označeno jako v internetovém prostředí) při výuce angličtiny v experimentální skupině a odpovídajícími změnami při standardní výuce v semináři(porovnávací skupina), výkony v obou typech výuky a výzkumem dalších faktorů učení se angličtině v internetovém prostředí, důležitých pro návrh relevantního využití internetových učebních materiálů. Výzkum ukázal v experimentální skupině změny skóre u následujících proměnných: růst u kritičnosti a autoregulace průběhu a výsledků učení, pokles u rozporné motivace, chápání učení jako příjmu poznatků a vnější stimulace učení. Pokleslo skóre u chápání učení jako použití znalostí a vzrostlo u vnější regulace průběhu učení. V internetovém prostředí se rozvinulo také hloubkové zpracování učiva založené na kritičnosti a hledání vztahů v učivu a celková autoregulace. V porovnávací skupině je patrný vzrůst konkretizace a pokles motivace ziskem diplomu, obojí jsou pozitivní změny. Analýza hlavních komponent zřejmě naznačuje přítomnost komponenty s některými rysy žádoucího stylu učení orientovaného na smysl ve výuce angličtiny u všech studentů účastnících se experimentu před jeho zahájením. V experimentální skupině se dále rozvinuly v průběhu experimentu některé atributy tohoto stylu učení (autoregulace, hloubkové zpracování učiva). Rozdíl zlepšení výkonů v obou skupinách není statisticky významný. Výzkum byl také zaměřen na následující faktory: většina studentů cítila při učení v prostředí internetu menší potřebu vnější stimulace učení, výsledky v materiálech zde při učení většině studentů nahradily značně pomoc učitele, většina z nich cítila stejnou důvěru ve své schopnosti při kontaktní výuce i v internetovém prostředí a rozmanitost způsobů učení v internetovém prostředí byla pro ni vyšší než v knize. z knihy. Nejvyšší roli při volbě internetových učebních materiálů hrála zpětná vazba a přehledná organizace materiálů. V práci je navrhováno využití internetových učebních materiálů při výuce angličtiny na vysoké škole jako doplnění tištěné či elektronické učebnice a výuky s možností zohlednit návrhy studentů na jejich volbu.

Abstract:

The doctoral thesis unites three views on the studied problems from the following perspectives: learning styles in general, learning styles of English learners and learning styles in the internet learning environment. This bird eye view distinguishes this thesis from those concentrating just on individual levels of the three above mentioned problems. Theoretically oriented part of the thesis focuses on the research and its findings in the above mentioned fields concerning learning styles. The terms learning styles and cognitive styles have not been defined unambiguously up to now. Among various learning styles models the Vermunt s model provides relevant and detailed view on learning in higher education with the respect to life-long education. Vermunt has developed a research tool called Inventory of Learning Styles (ILS). Changes of learning styles of university students can occur either in different learning contexts and environments or during first semesters at universities. Models of learning styles of English learners often focus on perceptual learning preferences (Dunn s model). A couple of models concentrating on learning English styles have been introduced (e.g. J.M.Reid). Learning English strategies have been explored intensively. Regulation of learning English has been focused on rather rarely. Both general (e.g. Vermunt s) and specially designed models of learning styles (CILESI) have been employed to study learning styles in internet and electronic environments. Research in computer assisted language and English learning concentrates rather on other factors. Learning styles have not been focused on intensively. The research part of the thesis concentrates on the changes of individual ILS variables during learning English from internet materials according to students choice (in the Summary chapter labelled in internet environment) and learning English in standard face-to-face seminar, students performance in the above environments and some other factors important for relevant use of internet learning materials. The results are related to findings of ILS-based research. The research showed growth of scores of critical processing and self-regulation of learning process and results and decrease of scores of ambivalent motivation, intake of knowledge and external stimulation of learning in internet environment. The scores of learning as use of knowledge decreased and the external regulation of learning process increased. Deep processing and self-regulation skills were developed in internet environment. In face-to-face seminars the score of concrete processing increased and the score of motivation by diploma acquisition dropped. Both these changes can be understood as positive ones. The results of analysis of principal components suggest the presence of some aspects of beneficial meaning directed learning style in all the students learning English participating in this study. Learning in internet environment supported some aspects of the above learning style during the experiment (e.g. self-regulation, deep processing). The difference in performance between students learning in internet and face-to-face environments was not statistically significant. The research also brought the following findings. Most of the students felt lower need of external stimulation in internet environment, the keys provided in internet materials compensated teacher feedback to high extent, the students felt the same self-efficacy in internet and face-to-face environments and they found more ways of learning in internet environment. Students prefer neither internet environment nor books for learning. The most important factor for choice of relevant learning materials was feedback and clear layout of materials. Based on the findings presented in this thesis I recommend the use of internet English learning materials as a complement of both printed and electronic English textbooks and standard lessons at universities.
