Media discourses of family in relation to "family protection referendum" in SME and Pravda

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the media image of family in the context of the referendum about its protection, which took place on February the 7th 2015 in Slovakia. Articles from two Slovak nationwide journals SME and Pravda were analysed, with the intention to describe and interpret what strategies were used by the media in constructing a representation of reality, actors and relationships related to the topic of family set into the context of the upcoming and subsequently realised referendum. The method of critical discourse analysis, in particular the Norman Fairclough's model, was used to accomplish the goal. The theoretical part addresses the basic theoretical starting points for research, which are the social and media construction of reality, the conceptualization of discourse and ideology according to N. Fairclough and the definition of the term family. The analytical part examines and interprets selected articles with regard to the established research questions and the chosen methodological approach. Based on the analysis, one can deduce, that the media image of family of both journals was based on the rejection of the form of family enforced by the initiators of the referendum and the reflection of the occurrence of various family structures.

Abstract:

Predkladaná diplomová práca sa zaoberá analýzou mediálneho obrazu rodiny v kontexte referenda o jej ochrane, ktoré sa na Slovensku uskutočnilo 7. februára 2015. Analyzované boli publicistické články dvoch slovenských celoštátnych denníkov SME a Pravda s cieľom popísať a interpretovať, aké stratégie boli médiami využívané pri konštruovaní reprezentácie reality, aktérov a vzťahov súvisiacich s témou rodiny, zasadenej do kontextu pripravovaného a následne uskutočneného referenda. K dosiahnutiu cieľa bola zvolená metóda kritickej diskurzívnej analýzy, konkrétne model podľa Normana Fairclougha. Teoretická časť práce sa venuje základným teoretickým východiskám pre výskum, ktorými sú sociálna a mediálna konštrukcia reality, konceptualizácia diskurzu a ideológie podľa N. Fairclougha a vymedzenie pojmu rodina. Analytická časť skúma a interpretuje vybrané články s ohľadom na stanovené výskumné otázky a zvolený metodologický postup. Na základe analýzy možno vyvodiť, že mediálny obraz rodiny oboch denníkov bol postavený na odmietnutí presadzovanej formy rodiny iniciátormi referenda a reflektovaní výskytu rôznych rodinných štruktúr.
