Diplomová práce se zabývá jediným uzákoněným institutem přímé demokracie na lokální úrovni v České republice, kterým je místní referendum. Kromě stručného popisu právní úpravy místního referenda v ČR i ve vybraných zemích střední a jihovýchodní Evropy, je kladen důraz především na empirický výzkum místních referend v dlouhodobém horizontu.
