Geochemical changes of bentonite during its interaction with groundwater

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá chováním přírodního materiálu bentonitu při interakci s vodou. Bentonit je jílovitá hornina, se kterou se počítá jako s inženýrskou bariérou při budování hlubinných úložišť jaderného odpadu. K experimentu byl využit neaktivovaný bentonit B75 od firmy Keramost a.s. a destilovaná voda. Experiment běžel v chemické laboratoři po dobu půl roku. Byly sledovány interakce bentonitu s deionizovanou vodou při pokojové teplotě a v určitých intervalech byly odebírány vzorky volné a pórové vody. Na základě experimentálních údajů byly vyhodnoceny změny koncentrací hlavních kationů jílových minerálů ve vodách a popsán vývoj koncentrací kationů. Hlavní změny v interakci se odehrají v průběhu prvních šesti týdnů. Během půl roku jsou parametry na srovnatelné úrovni nebo dochází k minimálnímu vývoji. Z hlediska mobility se nejsnadněji uvolňuje sodík, poté draslík, hořčík, a vápník (Na+ > K+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+).

Abstract:

This Diploma thesis deals with behaviour of natural bentonite material during its interaction with water. Bentonite is a clayey rock, which is being used as an engineered barrier at building deep spent nuclear fuel storage. Unactivated bentonite B75 from Keramost a. s. and deionized water were used for the experiment. The experiment ran for half a year in laboratory. Bentonite interactions with deionized water were observed at room temperature and at selected intervals the samples of free water and pore water were taken. Based on experimental data the changes in concentrations of major cations of clay minerals in the free and pore water were evaluated and evolution of cations concentrations were described. Major changes in the interaction will take place during the first six weeks. Parameters are at a comparable values or have minimal evolution during the half-year period. In terms of mobility the most easily released is sodium, than potassium, magnesium and calcium (Na+ > K+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+).
