Analysis of the slope dynamics of the Phillips curve in the Swiss Confederation

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na vhodnost modelování inflace prostřednictvím modelů novokeynesiánské Phillipsovy křivky (NKPC) a na zjišťování účinnosti klasické monetární politiky prostřednictvím zkoumání dynamiky vlivu produktové mezery ekonomiky na příkladu Švýcarské konfederace. Teoretická část práce popisuje historický vývoj východisek teorie Phillipsovy křivky se zvýšeným důrazem na její novokeynesiánskou podobu. V praktická části je sestaven model GMM na datech za Švýcarskou konfederaci, jehož výsledek využijeme k verifikaci hypotéz, o tom, zda je statisticky silnějším modelem popisu dané ekonomiky je model HNKPC oproti modelu původnímu (NKPC). Dále pak, jestli dochází ke zplošťování NKPC (resp. HNKPC), a tudíž k poklesu významu produktové mezery u modelů (prostřednictvím setrvalého poklesu hodnoty odhadu parametru). Čtvrtá kapitola je věnována rozboru výsledků v praktické části. Cílem práce je odpovědět na otázky vhodnosti modelů NKPC pro modelaci inflace ve švýcarském hospodářství, a dále do jaké míry je monetární politika schopna ovlivňovat ekonomické veličiny a hospodářství jako celek.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the suitability of modelling inflation through New Keynesian Phillips curve (NKPC) models, and on identifying the effectiveness of conventional monetary policy by examining the dynamics of the output gap effect of the economy using the Swiss Confederation as an example. The theoretical part of the paper describes the historical development of the foundations of the Phillips curve theory with an increased emphasis on its New Keynesian form. In the practical part, a GMM model is constructed on data for the Swiss Confederation, the result of which is used to verify the hypotheses about whether the HNKPC model is a statistically stronger model for describing the given economy compared to the original model (NKPC). Then, whether there is a flattening of the NKPC (or HNKPC) and hence a decline in the importance of the product gap for the models (via a persistent decline in the value of the parameter estimate). The fourth section is devoted to the analysis of the results in the practical part. The aim of the thesis is to answer the questions of the suitability of the NKPC models for modelling inflation in the Swiss economy, as well as the extent to which monetary policy is able to influence economic variables and the economy as a whole.
