First-principles calculations of total energy of systems of ordered structures of transition metals

Abstract:

Sigma fáze má nepříznivý vliv na mechanické vlastnosti komerčních slitin, hlavně na snižování pevnosti a tažnosti. Křehká sigma fáze byla poprvé popsána Bainem v systému Fe-Cr [5]. V současné době je podle Villarse [7] popsáno asi 110 binárních a ternárních intermetalických fází se stabilní strukturou sigma fáze. Znalost oblasti její stability je velmi důležitá pro praxi. Proto jsme se zabývali použitím ab initio metod výpočtu celkové energie k určení této stability. Tento přístup má pevný fyzikální základ a umožňuje předpovědět oblast stability sigma fáze v kovových materiálech. V předložené práci byly použity následující ab initio metody: metoda linearizovaných muffin-tinových orbitalů s aproximací atomových sfér (LMTO-ASA: Linear Muffin-Tin Orbitals in Atomic Sphere Approximation) a metoda linearizovaných přidružených rovinných vln s využitím plného potenciálu (FLAPW: Full Potential Linear Augmented Plane Waves). Na začátku ab initio výpočtů bylo provedeno několik předběžných výpočtů, pomocí kterých byly nalezeny optimální vstupní parametry tj. Radius Muffin Tin (RMT) parametry a vhodný počet k bodů v Brillouinově zóně. Do výpočtů byl zahrnut vliv relaxace mřížkových parametrů všech struktur. Celkové energie spočítané pomocí ab initio metod lze využít dvěma způsoby, které byly použity v této disertační práci. Prvním je odhad celkových tvorných energií dané struktury a druhým způsobem je využití rozdílů celkových energií zvolené struktury a SER stavu čistých složek k výpočtům fázových diagramů. Za použití programu pro metodu LMTO ASA bylo zkoumáno všech 32 možných konfigurací, které se vyskytují ve struktuře sigma fáze každého ze studovaných systémů a byla vypočtena tvorná energie sigma fáze ve všech binárních systémech, z nichž se ternární systémy Fe-Ni-Cr a Cr-Fe-W skládají. Provedli jsme také ab initio výpočty celkové energie prvků Cr, Fe, Ni a W v jejich experimentálně pozorovaných SER strukturách a ve struktuře sigma fáze užitím FLAPW metody realizované ve WIEN97 kódu [30] při rovnovážných mřížkových parametrech, to je při objemu, který odpovídá minimu celkové energie. Výměnný-korelační člen byl vypočítán v rámci všeobecné gradientové aproximace (GGA) [22]. Do výpočtu bylo zahrnuto magnetické uspořádání standardních referenčních fází. Následně byly spočteny diference celkové energie mezi sigma fází a standardním referenčním stavem při teplotě 0 K pro všechny studované prvky. Ab initio výpočty mřížkové stability různých struktur čistých prvků provedených metodou FLAPW poskytují možnost zdokonalení výpočtů fázových diagramů. Termodynamické modelování sigma fáze v systémech Fe-Ni-Cr a Cr-Fe-W bylo provedeno metodou CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) založenou na hodnotách termodynamických funkcí fází, kde jsou užity ab initio vypočítané diference energií mezi sigma fází a základním referenčním stavem fází pro čisté prvky. Na základě skutečnosti, že sigma fáze není stechiometrická struktura, byl použit pro její termodynamické modelování nový fyzikální dvoumřížkový model [58], který dává dobrou shodu s experimentem ve srovnání se starým třímřížkovým modelem [55]. Tento dvoumřížkový model byl užit k výpočtům fázových diagramů v uvedených soustavách. Entropický člen Gibbsovy energie prvků ve struktuře sigma fáze a dodatková Gibbsova energie sigma fáze byly nastaveny na experimentální fázová rovnovážná data. Rovněž je třeba zdůraznit, že nový dvoumřížkový model poskytuje hodnoty Gibbsovy energie a entalpie fází v celé oblasti složení, zatímco třímřížkový model poskytuje hodnoty těchto veličin pouze v omezeném rozmezí koncentrací. významná při výpočtech fázových diagramů vícesložkových systémů. Výsledky modelování fázových diagramů binárních podsystémů Ni-Cr a Fe-Ni resp. Cr-W a Fe-W ternárních systémů Fe-Ni-Cr a Cr-Fe-W byly konfrontovány s experimentálními daty a tvorné energie (hypotetických) sigma fází vypočítaných ab initio v Ni-Cr a Fe-Ni resp. Cr-W a Fe-W systémech byly porovnány s termodynamicky optimalizovanými hodnotami tvorné entalpie. V obou případech byly výsledky ab initio výpočtů v rozumném souhlasu s výsledky experimentů resp. s výsledky termodynamického modelování. Výpočty fázových diagramů byly provedeny za použití programu THERMO CALC.

Abstract:

The sigma phase is of crucial importance because of the disadvantageous influence on mechanical properties of the commercial alloys, mainly lowering the impact toughness and reducing creep ductility. The brittle sigma phase was firstly described in the Fe-Cr system by Bain [5]. Recently, Villars et al. [7] have reported about 110 binary and ternary intermetallic phases with stable sigma phase structure. The knowledge of its region of stability is very important for practice. Therefore we have considered using of ab initio methods of calculation of total energy for determination of its stability. This approach has a solid physical background and enables us to predict the region of stability of sigma phase in metallic materials.. In submitted theses following ab initio methods were used: LMTO-ASA method- Linear Muffin-Tin Orbitals in Atomic Sphere Approximation and FLAPW method-Full Potential Linear Augmented Plane Waves. Some preliminary calculations have been performed to find out the optimum input parameters, i.e. Radius Muffin Tin (RMT) parameters and the number of k points in the Brillouin zone at the beginning of ab initio calculations. The influence of relaxation of lattice parameters of all structures was included. There are two main fields of use of ab initio calculated total energies explored in the thesis. The first one is the calculation of total energies of formation of given structures, while the next one is employing total energy differences of chosen structure and SER (standard element reference) state of pure components in phase diagram calculations. All possible 32 configurations occurring in the sigma phase structure of each studied system were investigated using the LMTO ASA code and energy of sigma phase formation was determined in all binary systems in ternary Fe-Ni-Cr and Cr-Fe-W systems. We have performed ab initio calculations of the total energy of Cr, Fe, Ni and W in their experimentally observed SER structure and in the sigma phase structure using the FLAPW method implemented in the WIEN 97 code [30] at the equilibrium lattice parameters, i. e. at the volume corresponding to the minimum total energy. The exchange-correlation term was evaluated within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) [22]. The magnetic ordering of the SER phases was taken into account. Subsequently we evaluated the total energy differences between the sigma phase and SER state at the temperature 0 K for all studied elements. The ab initio calculations of lattice stability of various structures of pure constituents performed by FLAPW method provide a possibility of improving phase diagram calculations. Thermodynamic modelling of sigma phase in Fe-Ni-Cr and Fe-Cr-W systems were performed by CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) method based on values of thermodynamic functions of phases where ab initio calculated energy differences for sigma- and SER phases for pure constituents were used. Using the fact that the sigma phase is not stechiometric structure, a new physical two-sublattice model [58] for its thermodynamic modelling was employed, which yields a good agreement with experimental data in comparison with the old three sublattice model [55]. This two-sublattice model was used for calculations of phase diagrams in mentioned systems. Entropy term of Gibbs energy of elements in sigma phase structure and excess Gibbs energy of mixing of sigma phase have still to be adjusted to the experimental phase equilibrium data. It should be emphasised that the new two sublattice model yields the values of Gibbs energy and enthalpy of sigma phase in the whole composition range while the three sublattice model gives these quantities only in a limited range of concentrations. This fact is important in calculations of phase diagrams of multicomponent systems. Abstract:

es calculated ab initio in Ni-Cr and Fe-Ni resp. Cr-W and Fe-W systems were collated with thermodynamically optimised values of enthalpy of formation. In both cases, reasonal agreement of calculation results with experiment or with the results of thermodynamic optimisation was reached. The calculations of phase diagram were performed by means of THERMO CALC programme.
