Possibilities and benefits of integrating the accommodation facility into the offer of GDS

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem globálních distribučních systémů (GDS) z hlediska jejich využití a významu v oblasti distribuce ubytovacích kapacit. Cílem studie je shrnout historii globálních distribučních systémů, popsat, jakým způsobem je ubytovací zařízení využívají a nastínit současnou situaci na trhu. Dále zasazuje systémy do kontextu přímé a nepřímé distribuce kapacit. S využitím matematických, statistických a komparativních metod a analýz posuzuje postavení GDS v distribučním mixu dvou vybraných pražských ubytovacích zařízení. Tyto metody jsou doplněny řízenými rozhovory s dvěma představitelkami ubytovacích zařízení a s jedním představitelem přední zprostředkovatelské společnosti. Výsledky ukazují, že navzdory odlišnému vývoji produkce z GDS v jednotlivých zařízeních, systémy stále zprostředkovávají část celkového objemu pokojonocí a přispívají tak k celkové obsazenosti zařízení. Byl také potvrzen předpoklad, že GDS využívá převážně business klientela, což přispívá k rovnoměrnějšímu rozložení toku hostů v průběhu roku. Největším přínosem této distribuční cesty je to, že je díky ní možnost oslovit další segment, ke kterému by se zařízení pravděpodobně jinak nedostala.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis attempts to explore the nature of Global Distribution Systems (GDS) in terms of their usage and importance in the distribution of accommodation capacity. The aim of this thesis is to summarise the history of GDS, portray the way accommodation facilities employ them and analyse the current market situation. Moreover, it places the systems in the wider context of direct and indirect capacity distribution. Through the application of mathematical, statistical, and comparative methods and analysis, it assesses the position of GDS in the distribution mix of two selected Prague accommodation facilities. These methods are further complemented by controlled interviews with two accommodation facility representatives and one representative of a leading intermediary company. This thesis concludes that despite the different development of GDS production in individual facilities, the systems still mediate part of the total volume of overnight stays and thus contribute to the total occupancy of the facility. Additionally, the thesis confirms the assumption that GDS is mainly used by the business clients, which contributes to a more evenly distributed flow of guests during the year. Overall, it has been proven that the biggest benefit of this distribution route is that it enables the facility to address another segment that they would probably not otherwise reach.
