Genre turbulences on Venus: Stream of inspiration in sci-fi film between the 1950s and the 1960s

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje filmovou tvorbu Pavla Klušanceva v kontextu rozvoje vědeckofantastického žánru na přelomu 50. a 60. let mezi východním a západním blokem. Snaží se zodpovědět na otázku, jaké konkrétní inspirační proudy mezi oběma bloky existovaly, s jejichž pomocí se přenášely jednotlivé žánrové konvence. Tento text se věnuje především inspiračním proudům v případě filmové distribuce z Východu na Západ. Analýza snímku Cesta ke hvězdám a filmu Planeta bouří a jejich západních „recyklovaných“ verzí Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet a Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women odkrývá konkrétní inspirační proudy, které ovlivnily pozdější vývoj jak amerického, tak i sovětského vědeckofantastického filmu. Práce čerpá z žánrové teorie Ricka Altmana, analýz Vivian Sobchackové a Alexandra Fjodorova a z textů Barbary Klingerové, Kristin Roth-Eyové, Jurije Chaňutina, Jevgenije Charitonova, Andreje Ščerbaka-Žukova, a memoárů Pavla Klušanceva.

Abstract:

This study analyses work of film director Pavel Klushantsev in the context of development of science fiction genre at the turn of the 1950s and the 1960s between Eastern and Western blocs. It answers the question, which particular streams of inspiration existed between those two blocs and what genre conventions were transferred. The study examines primarily streams of inspiration in case of film distribution from the East to the West. Analysis of motion pictures Road to the Stars and Planet of Storms plus its Western re-edited versions Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet and Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women uncovers particular inspirations that influenced later development of both American and Soviet sci-fi film. The study is based on genre theory by Rick Altman, analyses by Vivian Sobchack and Alexander Fedorov, studies by Barbara Klinger, Kristin Roth-Ey, Yuri Khanyutin, Yevgeniy Kharitonov, Andrei Shcherbak-Zhukov, and memoirs by Pavel Klushantsev.
