AMPK je heterotrimer skládající se ze tří podjednotek. Díky své schopnosti udržovat fyziologický poměr AMP:ATP je považován za energetický senzor buňky. Tento protein ovlivňuje širokou škálu proteinů důležitých v metabolismu lipidů, sacharidů a bílkovin, ale také mnoho buněčných procesů včetně autofagie, biogeneze mitochondrií, polarity a proliferace buněk. The AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of three subunits. Thanks to its ability to maintain the physiological level of AMP:ATP ratio it is considered as a sensor of cellular energy status.
