The comparison of prevalence of overweight and obesity in college students in Ostrava and Zilina cities

Abstract:

Obezita je jedním z nejvýznamnějších evropských zdravotních problémů, protože výrazně zvyšuje riziko chronických onemocnění. Vyskytuje se v stále dřívějším období. Diplomová práce má charakter deskriptivní studie, kde byly zařazeni studenti 2. ročníků klasických gymnázii ve věku 16-17 let v městech Ostrava a Žilina. Celkový počet respondentů byl 243. Cíl práce: Cílem práce je poskytnutí pohledu na současný trend nadváhy a obezity středoškoláků v SR a ČR. Metodika: Jde o deskriptivní studii, která se dělala v prosinci 2009. Obě skupiny byly podrobeny antropometrickému měření tělesné výšky hmotnosti a obvodu pasu. Studenti byli měřeni před hodinou tělesné výchovy. Byl jim taktéž dán dotazník, ve kterém jsme chtěli zjistit jejich stravovací a pohybové návyky a jejich názor na životní styl. Výsledky: Chlapci z obou měst vykazují mírné zvýšení hmotnosti, větší procento v skupině BMI nad 25 i po srovnání s percentilovým grafem - skupina mírného zvýšení. Dívky mají vyšší procento podváhy než nadváhy. Mají lepší stravovací návyky, ale méně pijí, méně provozují sport než chlapci. Obě skupiny mají nízký příjem ovoce a zeleniny. Mají rovněž podobná procenta u sezení za počítačem a sledování televize. 1/3 holek a 11% chlapců není se sebou spokojeno, ale chtějí se změnit. Závěr: Z výše uvedených faktů můžeme usuzovat, že prevalence nadváhy a obezity není ještě alarmující, ale je už možné vidět vzrůstající trend. Je za potřeby situaci hlídat a snažit se ji zlepšit, hlavně za pomoci prevence.

Abstract:

Obesity is one of the most important health problems in Europe, because it increases the risk of lots of chronic diseases. Nowdays this problem starts at earlier age. The diploma work has a descriptive character. In this study there were the students of Grammar schools in Zilina and Ostrava cities. They were 16-17 years old. Total number of respondents was 243. Goals: The main goal of this work is to give a view of present overweight and obesity trend among the students in Slovak republic and Czech republic. Methods: It is a descriptive study, which was made in December 2009. Both groups were submitted to the anthropometrics measures of stature, body weight and waistline. The students were measured before Physical Education. They were given the questionaires as well. We wanted to find out their consumer habits, mobility and their opinion to life style. Results: The boys are indicating an increase of body weight, there is also a higher percentage in group BMI over 25 in comparison with percetile graph. The girls have a higher percentage from underweight to overweight. They have got better consumer habits, but they drink less. The boys play sport more than girls. In both groups there is a low consumption of fruits and vegetables. Also they have similar percentage of sitting behind computer and watching television. 1/3 of girls and 11% of boys aren´t satisfied with themselves but they want to change. Conclusions: Because of this situation it is very important to do a survey and try to improve it, mainly by prevention.
