The Representation of Western planning in Czechoslovak architectural press in the period of 1945-1989

Abstract:

Oficiálne architektonické časopisy publikované v Československu v období socializmu (1948-1989) pokrývali celú komunitu architektov, združených v plánovacích ústavoch. Napriek všeobecnej kontrole tlačených médií, architektonické časopisy informovali o západe. Ako reprezentácia prebiehala a aké implikácie nám jej prítomnosť dáva k pochopeniu fungovania územného plánovania v štátne socialistickom režime? V tejto dizertačnej práci pripisujem architektonickým časopisom význam ako objektom architektonického ale i sociologického skúmania. Pracujem s výskumom Beatriz Colominy (1988, 1994) o nevyhnutnosti médií, reklamy, masovej komunikácie a súvisiacej medzinárodnej diskusie pre vývoj modernej architektúry na začiatku a v priebehu 20. storočia. Mohli by byť aj československé architektonické časopisy považované za miesta produkcie architektúry a zdroje medzinárodnej diskusie ako je to v prípade západných médií, ktoré skúma Colomina? Aby som zistila, ako boli informácie o západnom plánované reprezentované v časopisoch, skúmala som všetky väčšie architektonické časopisy, ktoré vychádzali za socializmu. Viedla som rozhovory s bývalými editormi s cieľom zistiť, ako bolo s týmto obsahom zaobchádzané v časopisoch a aká bola ich rola v procese prenosu západného poznania v oblasti urbanizmu. Na príklade slovenského časopisu Projekt vysvetľujem dynamiku redakcie, ideológiu, cenzúru, náhodu a materialitu, ktoré hrali úlohu pri reprezentácii západného obsahu v tomto oficiálnom, no periférnom časopise. Analýza ukazuje, že napriek železnej opone neboli československí plánovači oddelení od západného sveta, ale rozvíjali sa v kontakte s ním. Architektonické médiá dovoľovali výmenu medzi architektmi aj v čase studenej vojny. Výmena medzi východným a západným svetom síce zrejme nebola obojstranná, no stále silná na prenos konceptov, ktoré mohli byť neskôr zhmotnené v návrhoch a realizáciách mestského plánovania. Môžeme povedať, že západné princípy urbanizmu v Československu kolovali kvôli, no aj napriek totalitnému režimu, ktorý sa snažil o inovácie a vedel, že tie pramenia zo spolupráce a výmenou so svetom. Tolerované profesionálne kontakty a prezentácia v médiách umožňovala architektom byť v kontakte so západom. Znalosť o tomto prenose západných konceptov oslabuje dominanciu sovietskej ideológie v plánovaní a spochybňuje izoláciu československého mestského plánovania.

Abstract:

Official professional architectural magazines published in Czechoslovakia during the state-socialist period (1948 – 1989) covered the whole architectural community gathered in state planning offices. Despite the control of printed media, architectural magazines informed about the West. How was the representation handled and what implications does it bring to our understanding of urban planning in the state-socialist period? In this dissertation I ascribe significance to architectural magazines as objects of both architectural and sociological interest. I use the work of Beatriz Colomina (1988, 1994) on the inevitable importance of media, advertisements and mass communication and resulting international discussion for the development of modern architecture in the beginning and during the 20th century. Could Czechoslovak architectural magazines be considered as sites of architectural production and international discussion as their Western counterparts studied by Colomina? In order to find out how the information on Western planning was represented, I did library research of all the major architectural magazines of the state-socialist period. To find out about the background, about how the content was treated in magazines, I conducted interviews with former magazine’s editors and studied their role in the process of transfer of Western knowledge on urban planning. Using the case of Slovak magazine Projekt I explain the dynamics of editorial board, ideology, censorship, contingency and the role of materiality in the representation of Western content in the official, yet peripheral, magazine. The analysis proves that despite Iron Curtain, Czechoslovak urban planning discourse was not fully separated from the Western world, but was largely developed in contact with the West. Architectural media allowed exchange between architects and across the Iron Curtain even during the Cold war era. The exchange between the Western and the Eastern world, however, might not be dialogical, but still strong enough to transfer concepts that could be later materialised in urban planning designs or realisations. We can assume that modern planning principles in Czechoslovakia were circulating both because and despite the totalitarian regime, as the socialist state ceased to be modern and knew that the progress stemmed from cooperation and mutual exchange. Through tolerated professional contacts and presentation in media, architects were allowed to remain in contact with the West. The transfer of Western concepts to Czechoslovakia questions the dominant position of Soviet ideology in urban planning and the degree of isolation of Czechoslovak urbanism.
