Master's thesis

Restoration of the statue of Jan Nepomucky from Roškopov and exploration of the possibility of fixing separate sculpture layers. Surface treatment of stone statues, general reflection on past and current approaches to their restoration, with specific examples from the nearby surroundings of Roškopov.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se v úvodu zabývá restaurováním barokního sousoší Sv. Jana Nepomuckého se dvěma anděly z kaple v Roškopově u Staré Paky. Zahrnuje samostatné a komplexní zpracování restaurátorského průzkumu, návrhu na restaurování a restaurátorský zásah včetně jeho dokumentace. Vlastní restaurátorské práce na objektu obsahují všechny standardní konzervační postupy, vyplývající ze zadání a stavu sochařského díla. V závěru praktické části práce, byla provedena rekonstrukce chybějících částí sousoší a retuš. Druhá část diplomové práce se věnuje problematice fixace olejových nátěrů za použití adheziv Paraloid B72 a Acrylkleber 498 HV. Zejména se řeší jejich požití v exteriéru, nebo polo-exteriéru (otevřené Roškopovské kapli). Poslední část práce je věnována povrchovým úpravám kamene, převážně výstavbě a smyslu provádění polychromie na kamenných sochách, vystavených vlivu prostředí v exteriéru a polemice nad minulými i současnými přístupy restaurátorských zásahů se zaměřením na příklady z praxe v české krajině, zejména v okolí Roškopova.

Abstract:

The main task of this master thesis is the restoration of a group of sculptures of Sv. Jan Nepomucký with two angels located in a chappel of Roškopov near Stará Paka. The practical part of the thesis consists of an individual, complex restoration research, proposal of sculptures restoration procedure and desription of the factual sculptures restoration including the corresponding theoretical documentation. The actual restoration works done on the sculpture object contains all the standard stone conservation practices, follows the original master thesis intention and considers the original sculpture object status. The sculpture missing parts have been reconstructed and inpainted as a last activity of the master thesis practical part. The second part of the master thesis follows the problematique of fixation of oil coatings using the Paraloid B72 and Acrylkleber 498 HV adhesives specially focused on their exterior or half-exterior usage (in the chappel of Roškopov). The last master thesis part is about stone surface finishing techniques. Mainly focused on stone sculptures polychromy layering, located in exterior and facing various weather impacts. It further polemizes about current and previous stone restoration approaches using practical examples of sculptures located in Czech country.
