Industrial processing of diatomaceous earth in Iceland with a focus on its negative effects on the environment

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá těžbou a průmyslovým zpracováním křemeliny na Islandu a jejich negativními dopady na životní prostředí. Průzkum ložisek lokální křemeliny a její historické průmyslové využití je prováděn prostřednictvím literární rešerše a analýzy dostupných informačních zdrojů, přičemž zvláštní pozornost je věnována ložisku křemeliny v jezeře Mývatn na severovýchodě Islandu, kde v průběhu druhé poloviny 20. století probíhala těžba metodou sacího bagrování, které představovalo významný zásah do dna jezera. Práce zkoumá důsledky této těžby na krajinu a ekosystémy Islandu, a to prostřednictvím popisu dokumentovaných negativních dopadů. Na konkrétním případě tak demonstruje dopady těžby nerostných surovin v citlivých ekosystémech. Jednalo se zejména o úbytek bentické vegetace s téměř úplným vyhubením vzácných jezerních řasokoulí. Důsledkem toho došlo k narušení potravních vztahů, s úbytkem bentických živočichů, ryb a vodních ptáků. Některé z těchto změn v biosféře korelují s industrializací jezera, ale jeho ekologie a dynamika jsou tak složité, že je velmi těžké odlišit lidský vliv od přirozeného vývoje.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the mining and industrial processing of diatomaceous earth in Iceland and its negative impacts on the environment. An exploration of local diatomite deposits and their historical industrial use is carried out through a literature review and an analysis of available information resources. Special attention is given to the diatomite deposit in Lake Mývatn in the north-east of Iceland, where mining was carried out during the second half of the 20th century using the suction dredging method, which represented a significant intervention in the lake bed. This thesis examines the consequences of this mining on the landscape and ecosystems of Iceland through a description of the documented negative impacts. It demonstrates the impacts of mineral exploitation in sensitive ecosystems through a case study. In particular, there has been a loss of benthic vegetation, with the almost complete extinction of rare lake ball algae. As a consequence, food webs were disrupted, with the decline of bentos, fish and waterfowl. Some of these changes in the biosphere correlate with the industrialisation of the lake, but its ecology and dynamics are so complex that it is very difficult to distinguish human influence from natural development.
