Tyranny of the Majority: Tocqueville and J. S. Mill

Abstract:

Tematikou této bakalářské práce je tyranie většiny, jakožto negativní stránka demokratického pojetí vlády. Teoretickým východiskem zde byla stěžejní díla dvou předních evropských myslítelů A. de Tocqueville a J. S. Mill - Demokracie v Americe a Úvahy o vládě reprezentativní. Kapitoly postupně představují životy obou autorů a následně popisují jejich pohled na zmíněnou problematiku. Zabývají se pojetím demokracie, důsledky tyranie většiny a reformními návrhy, jež by měly projevům negativních jevů zabránit. Přínosem bakalářské práce je tak podání teoretického základu pro politické chápání demokratické společnosti se zaměřením na rizika, jež s sebou tato forma vlády přináší a pohled do života dvou zásadních mužů 19. století, kteří se zásadně zasloužili o rozvoj nejen politického chápání, ale i psychologie a sociologie.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor thesis is the tyranny of the majority, as a negative aspect of the democratic concept of government. We strive to create a comprehensive overview of all related concepts, causes and consequences, the knowledge of which should help us to prevent the occurence of the phenomenon. For this purpose, were used books of two leading European thinkers, Alexis de Tocqueville and John Stuart Mill - Democracy in America and Considerations on Representative Government. The chapters gradually present the lives of both autors and then describe their views on the issue. They deal with the concept of democracy, the consequences of the tyranny of the majority and reform proposals that should prevent the manifestations of negative phenomena. The contribution of the bachelor thesis is to provide a theoretical basis for a political understanding of a democratic society with a focus on the risks that this form of government brings and a look at the lives of two key men of the 19th century who fundamentally contributed to the development of sociology.
