Double Consciousness and Code-Switching in The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis investigates the complex interplay between the concepts of double consciousness and code-switching in Angie Thomas's novel The Hate U Give. The theoretical part of the thesis explores the definitions of the two terms, along with an examination of how they are linked since they are typically found in close association with the lives of African Americans. The notion of double consciousness is primarily centered around the sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois, who first identified this inner struggle in his seminal work The Soul of Black Folk. His analysis provides insight into the context of everyday life for African Americans, arguing they have a predisposition to experiencing doubled awareness. This internal conflict becomes more acute by the need to code switch, that is, to conform one’s behavior, actions, and speech to the majority’s. Furthermore, through literary analysis, the practical part of the thesis examines how the characters in the novel exhibit the phenomena of double consciousness and code-switching by means of the language, dialogue, and actions in the given fictional narrative.
