Preference for intuition or rationality and its influence on school results

Abstract:

Cílem studie bylo ověřit, zda preference kognitivního stylu – racionality a intuice má vliv na školní známky u vzorku 150 žáků ve věku 14-15 let. Dalšími oblastmi zájmu byly vliv preference kognitivního stylu na míru naděje a vliv na preferenci motivace k učení. V rámci studie se zkoumal i vztah mezi mírou naděje a školními známkami. V rámci studie byly využity dotazníkové metody Rational-Experiential Inventory for Adolescents (REI-A), Children’s Hope Scale (CHS) a Preferenční motivační dotazník. Známky byly sledovány z předmětů: český jazyk, fyzika, matematika, dějepis, zeměpis, přírodopis a chemie. Preference motivace k učení byla sledována u předmětů fyzika, matematika, dějepis, zeměpis, přírodopis a chemie. Výsledky studie jsou následující: mezi skupinami s odlišnými preferencemi kognitivního stylu jsou významné rozdíly v dosahovaných školních známkách u všech sledovaných předmětů, mezi skupinami s odlišnými preferencemi kognitivního stylu jsou významné rozdíly v míře naměřené naděje, mezi skupinami s odlišnými preferencemi kognitivního stylu jsou významné rozdíly v preferenci motivace k učení u poznávací motivace a morální motivace. Mezi mírou naděje a školními známkami je mírně pozitivní vztah.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to verify, if preference for rational or intuitive cognitive style has influence on school grades in sample of 150 respondents in age 14-15. Preference for intuition or rationality was examined in connection to hope and in connection to preference for motivation to learn. A relationship between hope and school grades was also examined. In study three self-report inventories were used - Rational-Experiential Inventory for Adolescents (REI-A), Children’s Hope Scale (CHS) and Preference for motivation inventory. School grades of these subjects were examined: Czech language, physics, mathematics, history, geography, biology science and chemistry. Preference for motivation to learn was examined in subjects: physics, mathematics, history, geography, biology science and chemistry. Results of study are as follows: among groups of different preferences for cognitive styles there are significant differences in all school grades. Among groups of different preferences for cognitive styles there are significant differences in measured hope. Among groups of different preferences for cognitive styles there are significant differences in preference for motivation to learn in cognitive motivation and moral motivation. Between hope and school grades there is a slightly positive correlation.
