Roma Children School Failure: Critical Reflection from the Intersectional Perspective

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce aplikuje intersekcionální perspektivu na téma školního neúspěchu romských dětí na českých školách. Nejprve je představen dominantní odborný diskurs zabývající se typickou školní kariérou Romů v českém vzdělávacím systému. Tento diskurs je založen především na teoriích o esencializovaných kulturních odlišnostech. Jedná se o teorie, které se ne vždy shodují s perspektivou sociální antropologie, z níž intersekcionální přístup vychází. Intersekcionalita je v následující části podrobně rozebrána a prezentována jako efektivní analytický nástroj k zachycení vícenásobné marginalizace sociálních aktérů a aktérek. Kategorie rasy/etnicity, třídy a genderu jsou identifikovány jako ty, skrze něž především dochází k sociální exkluze. V poslední části práce je pak dominantní odborný diskurs prezentovaný v první kapitole kriticky reflektován z intersekcionální perspektivy. Faktory ovlivňující školní neúspěch romských dětí na českých školách se tak ukazují být specifickými kombinacemi marginalizačních činitelů rasy/etnicity, třídy a genderu, čímž je rozbita představa homogenity Romů jako sociální skupiny, s níž běžně pracuje dominantní odborný diskurs.

Abstract:

This paper is focused on application the intersectional perspective to the theme of school failure of Roma children in the Czech schools. In the first instance is presented dominant expert discourse focused on typical school career of Romas in the Czech educational system. This discourse is principally based on theories about essencializated cultural differences. These are theories which in many cases do not resonate with perspective of social anthropology. Intersectionality is in detail analyzed in the following part of this paper and it is presented as an effective analytical instrument of interception the multidimensional marginalization of social actors. . Categories of race/ethnicity, class and gender are identified as main servants of social exclusion. In the last part of the paper is dominant expert discourse, presented in first chapter, reflected critically from intersectional perspective. So factors influenced school failure of Roma children on the Czech schools are seen as specific combinations marginalizating categories of race/ethnicity, class and gender. That is disruptive for the idea of homogenity of Romas as a social group, which is part of the dominant expert discourse in the Czech Republic.
