Removal of estrogens in different treatment processes

Abstract:

V této práci byly zjištovány hladiny estrogenních hormonů v přítocích a odtocích ze dvou různých typů čistíren odpadních vod (ČOV) – konvenčních, tj. mechanicko-biologických, a kořenových. Dále byly testovány dvě techniky k simulaci dalšího čisticího kroku ČOV – odstranění estrogenů pomocí nanočástic železa (nZVI) a ferátů. K extrakci a prekoncentraci byla použita metoda extrakce na tuhou fázi (SPE, sorbent Oasis HLB). Kvůli maximálnímu odstranění interferujících látek byly nutné i dva čisticí kroky (SPE se sorbenty Florisil a NH2). LC-MS/MS metoda s derivatizací dansylchloridem umožnila měření environmentálně relevantních koncentrací steroidů. Účinnost metod použitých pro odstranění estrogenů z kořenových čistíren byla se pohybovala v intervalu od -318% (zvýšení koncentrace v odtoku) do 98% a z konvenčních čistíren od 23 do 99%. nZVI neodstranilo většinu estrogenů ani při použití nejvyšší testované koncentrace (50 mg l-1), zatímco feráty již při 10 mg l-1 odstranily vice než 99% všech steroidů. Použití ferátů by mohlo být vhodné pro budoucí aplikace díky své šetrnosti vůči životnímu prostředí a vysoké účinnosti odstranění látek narušujících hormonální rovnováhu.

Abstract:

The levels of five estrogenic hormones in influents and effluents from two different types of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) – conventional, i.e. mechanical-biological WWTPs and constructed wetlands (CWs) – were investigated in this study. Additionaly, two different removal technologies were applied to WWTP effluent in order to simulate the next step of WWTP purification – treatment with zerovalent nanoiron (nZVI) and ferrates. Solid-phase extraction (Oasis HLB) was used for the extraction and preconcentration of estrogens from the samples and two SPE clean-up steps (using Florisil and NH2 sorbents) ensured maximal removal of the interfering matrix. An LC-MS/MS method with dansyl chloride derivatization was used for measuring environmentally relevant steroid concentrations. Estrogen removal from CWs ranged from -318 (increase of concentration in effluent) to 97.8% and from conventional WWTPs, from 23 to 99%. nZVI was not able to remove the majority of all estrogens even at the highest tested concentrations (50 mg l-1), whereas ferrates removed more than 99% of all estrogens at the concentration level of 10 mg l-1. Ferrate treatment could be a promising technique for future full-scale application because of its environmental friendliness and high effectiveness with respect to EDCs removal.
