Health information seeking behavior of diabetics patients: study of information horizons

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce řeší vyhledávání informací o zdraví u diabetiků. Je rozdělena na část teoretickou a praktickou. Text se skládá z pěti kapitol, doplněných o přílohu, která obsahuje scénář k rozhovoru, vzorový informovaný souhlas a naskenované mapy informačního horizontu jednotlivých respondentů. Práce se na úvod zabývá informačním chováním, definuje informační chování spojené se zdravím, onemocnění diabetes mellitus 1. typu a nakonec se nejvíce věnuje podstatě teorie informačního horizontu. Praktická část práce je zaměřena na zmapování informačního chování diabetiků 1. typu ve věku 18-30 let, a to pomocí metody informačního horizontu. Cílem práce je zjistit, jaké informační zdroje diabetici využívají, jak jsou s nimi spokojeni a co postrádají. Výsledkem studie je odpověď na stanovené výzkumné otázky, tabulka s přehledem využívaných informačních zdrojů při hledání informací o diabetu a naskenované mapy informačního horizontu diabetiků.

Abstract:

The Bachelor’s thesis focuses on health information seeking behavior of diabetics. It’s divided into theoretical and practical part. The text consists of five chapters supplemented by an attachement that contains an interview scenario, an exemplary informed consent and scanned maps of the information horizon of individual respondents. As an introduction, the paper first deals with information behaviour, health information seeking behaviour and the type 1 diabetes mellitus are defined and explained next while the ultimate focus is on the theory of information horizon, which is explained at the end of the theoretical part. Mapping the information behaviour of type 1 diabetics who are 18-30 years old through the method of information horizon is the main focus of the practical part. The aim of the work is to find out which information sources are used by diabetics, how satisfied they are with them and what they lack when using them. The result of the study provides answers to the identified research questions, a table with an overview of the information sources used in the search for information about diabetes and scanned maps of the information horizon of diabetics.
