Perspectives of Professionals on Parent - Child Alienation in the Context of Parental Separation

Anotace:

Empirická část je realizována kvalitativně prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s odborníky z oblasti psychologie, sociální práce, práva a dalších profesí zapojených do opatrovnických sporů. Popisují jej spíše jako vztahový proces vznikající v kontextu rodičovského konfliktu, předchozí kvality vztahu dítěte s rodičem, možností dítěte vytvářet si vlastní zkušenost s oběma rodiči i působení odborníků a institucí.

Abstract:

This thesis examines parent-child alienation in the context of custody disputes following parental separation, from the perspective of professionals involved in such cases. The aim of the thesis is to analyse how these professionals perceive the phenomenon, what experiences they have with it, how they evaluate their preparedness to address it, and which approaches they consider effective. The theoretical part defines parent-child alienation as a relational phenomenon rather than a diagnostic category. At the same time, it reflects the fact that, in the academic literature, this issue has historically been associated with the controversial concept of parental alienation syndrome, which has been criticised mainly for its lack of empirical support and its absence from diagnostic classifications. The empirical part is based on qualitative research conducted through semi-structured interviews with professionals from the fields of psychology, social work, law, and other professions involved in custody disputes. The data are analysed using thematic analysis in order to capture the experiences and perspectives of these professionals. The results show that professionals do not perceive alienation as a clearly bounded state or as a simple consequence of one parent's behaviour. Rather, they describe it as a relational process emerging in the context of parental conflict, the previous quality of the child's relationship with the parent, the child's opportunities to develop their own experience with both parents, and the involvement of professionals and institutions. They consider the creation of a safe space for the child's relationship with both parents, the separation of partner conflict from parenting, timely intervention, parental education, and interdisciplinary cooperation to be key. At the same time, they emphasise that professionals can support the family and help regulate conflict, but they cannot take responsibility away from the parents. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of parent-child alienation in custody disputes and may serve as a basis for the development of more sensitive professional practice.
