Dematerialisation and design: a qualitative study of material management in the Czech design community

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with mapping the attitudes, opinions and relationships of product designers and service designers. Through semi-structured interviews, they describe the design process they go through and interpret a subjective view of the way materials are handled. The main findings of the research show that dematerialization is currently present in the way decisions are made about the design process and in the relationship of the designer to the material. Among the material selection criteria, product designers and service designers indicate durability and life cycle. Based on interviews, the designers identify both the customer and the designer as a significant link in the transition. They interpret that they see the core of the change in educating the customer or user about the design process that the product goes through.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá mapovaním postojov, názorov a vzťahov produktových designérov a designérov služieb. Prostredníctvom pološtruktúrovaných rozhovorov opisujú designový proces, ktorým prechádzajú a interpretujú subjektívny pohľad na spôsob nakladania s materiálmi. Hlavné zistenia výskumu ukazujú, že dematerializácia je v súčasnosti prítomná v spôsobe rozhodovania o designovom procese a vo vzťahu designéra k materiálu. Medzi kritéria výberu materiálov produktový designéri a designéri služieb označujú životnosť a životný cyklus. Na základe rozhovorov designéri označujú oboch zákazníka a designéra, ako nezanedbateľný článok v tranzícií. Interpretujú, že jadrom zmeny vidia v edukácií zákazníka alebo uživateľa o designovom procese, ktorým produkt prechádza.
