Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se snaží na základě analýzy architektonických děl, pramenného studia i rešerše primární i sekundární literatury zodpovědět několik výzkumných otázek: jakým způsobem a na základě čeho byl konstruován Kotěrův zakladatelský mýtus v české moderní architektuře; jaké jsou myšlenkové hodnoty a odkaz Kotěrova díla, jehož vrchol byl konsensuálně stanoven českým dějepisem umění na rozmezí let přibližně 1908–1914; jaké různé tradice, inspirace a invence se setkávají v Kotěrově díle v letech 1908–1914 a jak se tyto linie mohly uplatňovat v Kotěrově díle paralelně vedle sebe? Práce předkládá aspekty konstrukce zakladatelského mýtu na základě národního, psychoanalytického, ale i genderového kontextu a na konkrétní výseči Kotěrova díla ukazuje, jak poměrně specifickým způsobem byla organizována Kotěrova projekční kancelář a jeho práce. V další části jsou rozpoznávány historizující a klasicizující tendence v Kotěrově díle na přelomu prvního a druhého desetiletí 20. století a na základě klíčového textu Jindřicha Vybírala Historismus v modernismu jim autor přiznává neopomenutelnou roli při formování modernistické myšlenky. Další část práce se zabývá třemi dosud méně reflektovanými oblastmi Kotěrovy tvorby, kde nacházíme pozoruhodné poznatky o Kotěrově smýšlení, ale i tvůrčích preferencích: je to nábytkový a interiérový design, zahradní architektura a rozvíjení ornamentu a užívání barevnosti. Samostatná kapitola je věnována realizaci Kotěrovy vlastní vily na Vinohradech, její teoretické reflexi a jejímu pozdějšímu epigonství dalšími architekty. Poslední část práce se zaměřuje na sociální aspekt Kotěrovy architektonické a designérské tvorby se závěrem, že Kotěra byl tvůrcem, který našel nejširší uplatnění v rámci vkusu střední a vyšší buržoasie. V této části práce se dílčí kapitoly dotýkají také Kotěrova vyrovnávání s architektonickým kubismem po roce 1911 a stranou nezůstanou ani kořeny Kotěrova poválečného pokusu o nový dekorativismus, který byl paralelní vůči pokusu generace mladších architektů o národní styl. Naopak jako asi nejvýznamnější Kotěrův přínos pro pozdější avantgardní architekty je shledán v položení základů účelné, strojové architektuře. Kotěra z této části práce vychází jako univerzální autor nebývale schopný tvůrčím a osobitým způsobem reagovat na různé podněty a pojovat různé vlivy. Tvorba Jana Kotěry se v předkládané práci ukazuje jako významově vícevrstevný celek, který byl nositelem často ambivalentních tradic. Přesto v ní autor nachází fascinaci a nepopiratelný význam pro tuzemskou architekturu 20. století, neboť Kotěra právě ve sledovaném období dokázal dospět k neopakovatelnému a harmonickému spojení starého a nového, univerzálního a lokálního, městského/buržoasního a venkovského/rurálního, symetrického a asymetrického a vertikálního a horizontálního.

Abstract:

The work analysis the architectonic works, using the sources and research of primary and secondary bibliography to answer several questions: the origin and reason for Kotěra’s founding myth in Czech modern architecture; value of ideas and legacy of Kotěra’s work with the peak being set by Czech art history between 1908 and 1914; traditions, inspirations and inventions ending in Kotěra’s work in 1908–1914 and the way the trends could be applied in Kotěra’s work parallelly. In the first part, the work deals with the construction of the founding myth based on the nationalistic, psychoanalytic and gender context and uses the specific sector of Kotěra’s work to illustrate the distinctive way how Kotěra’s design studio and his work were organized. The second part addresses historicizing and classicizing tendencies in Kotěra’s work at the turn of the 1910s and 1920s. The author engages the key text Historism in Modernism by Jindřich Vybíral to acknowledge the essential role when shaping the modernistic ideas. The other part of the work deals with three less reflected fields of Kotěra’s work where we find remarkable knowledge of Kotěra’s thinking and his creative preferences: it is furniture and interior design, garden architecture and the development of ornaments and colours. An independent chapter is dedicated to realization of Kotěra’s own villa at Vinohrady, its theoretical reflection and epigonism. The last part focuses on the social aspect of Kotěra’s architectonic and designer production with the conclusion that Kotěra was the creator, who found the greatest use in the taste of the middle and upper bourgeoisie. The sub-chapters also touch upon the fact how Kotěra coped with architectonic cubism after 1911; the roots of Kotěra’s after-war attempt to achieve new decorativism parallel with new-style architects, who were one generation younger, is not left out. The most important Kotěra’s contribution for future avant-garde architecture appears to be the foundations of purposeful and mechanical architecture. Kotěra proves to be a universal author, who is able to react to various impulses and influences in a creative and distinctive way. Jan Kotěra’s work appears to be a multi-layered complex, which carried almost ambivalent traditions. However, the author found inspiration and undeniable importance for 20th century Czech architecture because Kotěra managed to reach the one and only harmonic connection of the old and the new, the universal and the local, the urban/bourgeois and the rural, the symmetric and the asymmetric as well as the vertical and the horizontal.
