Metamorphoses of interpretation of the Buddhist doctrine in publications of the 14th Dalai Lama

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis deals with the fourteenth Dalai Lama publications, Tändzina Gjamccha. I am focusing on the impact of western science to the interpretation of the four-teenth Dalai Lama Buddhist teachings. I came into a conclusion that there are no significant content changes, but there is a noticeable change in the formal aspects of the texts. Tändzin Gjamccho had while working with western scientist learned to speak their language, what he uses in his recent publications. As for the content changes, Tändzin Gjamccho openly talks about leaving some dogmas, which do not correspond with empirical findings in science, but he has no instrument to realize such matter. The connection between science and Buddhism is significant especially in new institutions, which focus on research of the human brain and changes caused by Buddhist practice. For instance it is the Mind and Life Institute, Center for Investigating Healthy Minds or Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies. These institutions seem like scientific institutes, but their methodology is questionable. Not only that science influenced the form of Tändzin Gjamccho’s interpretation of the Budd-hist doctrine, but also he and the Buddhism made their impact on the western science. There are some reasons why Tändzin Gjamccho is interested in the science. It will be personal interest, but certainly also the promotion of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan culture in general.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá publikáciami štrnásteho dalajámu, Tändzina Gjamccha. Zaoberám sa vplyvom západnej vedy na výklad buddhistickej náuky štrnásteho dalajlámu. Došla som k záberu, že neexistujú sú žiadne výrazné obsahové zmeny, výrazná zmena ale nastala vo formálnej časti textov. Tändzin Gjamccho sa počas spolupráce s vedcami naučil hovoriť ich rečou a to využíva v posledných publikáciách. Čo sa týka obsahových zmien, Tändzin Gjam-ccho síce otvorene hovorí o vypustení dogiem, ktoré nekorešpondujú s empirickými poznat-kami vedy, ale sám nemá žiaden nástroj aby tieto mýty z náuky odstránil. Prepojenie bud-dhizmu a vedy je značné hlavne v nových inštitúciách, ktoré skúmajú ľudský mozog a zmeny v ňom spôsobené buddhistickou praxou. Ide napríklad o Mind and Life Institute, Center for Investigating Healthy Minds, prípadne Santa Barbara Institute for consciousness studies. In-štitúcie budia dojem vedeckých pracovísk. Ich metodológia je ale spochybniteľná. Teda nie len že veda ovplyvnila formu výkladu náuky Tändzin Gjamccha. On sám a buddhizmus výrazne ovplyvnil vedu. Dôvodov prečo sa Tändzin Gjamccho zaujíma o vedu je, myslím, niekoľko. Bude to osobný záujem, ale určite aj propagovanie tibetského buddhizmu a tibetskej kultúry vôbec.
