Assessment of convergence trends in the performance of industries in selected EU countries

Abstract:

Diplomová práce analyzuje strukturální ekonomickou sladěnost vybraných členů EU k národnímu hospodářskému cyklu a také cyklu EU. Odvětví jsou zařazena do skupiny dle vztahu k národnímu či unijnímu cyklu. Mezi nekorelovaná neboli proticyklická odvětví byl v práci zařazen primární sektor spolu s těžbou a příbuznými obory, stavebnictvím a veřejnými službami. Na základě analýzy korelace v časových úsecích je určena konvergenční či divergenční tendence odvětví. Sladěnost vybraných států s EU je popsána i pomocí výpočtu Krugmanova, Herfindahl–Hirschmanova a Lilien indexu. Korelace i konvergence je analyzována také na národní úrovni ve vztahu k EU a následně dvěma světovým lídrům, USA a Rusku. z analýzy na národní úrovni vyšel závěr, že u většiny zemí vzorku se objevuje divergentní trend od hospodářského cyklu EU, který je kompenzován konvergencí ke zbytku světa.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis analyses the structural economic alignment of selected EU members to the national and the EU business cycle. Branches are classified according to their relation to the comparative value. The uncorrelated/countercyclical industries included the primary sector, mining and related industries, construction, and public services. Based on the analysis of the correlation in time periods, the convergence or divergence tendencies of the industry are determined. The correlation to selected countries with the EU is also described by calculating the Krugman, Herfindahl – Hirschman and Lilien index. Correlation and convergence are also analysed at the national level in relation to the EU and subsequently to two world leaders, the USA and Russia. The analysis at national level concluded that most countries show a divergent trend from the EU economic cycle, offset by convergence to the rest of the world.
