The functions of the modal auxiliary will in English sentences with respect to Czech

Abstract:

This thesis aims to explain what modality and related concepts mean with a special focus on the verb "will" and its possible usage regarding the Czech language. Firstly it describes the basic concepts regarding verbs and their placement in sentences. A theoretical background is built on this individual part as to how to approach the analysis of different types of verbs. The initial part also briefly explains the differentiation between different kinds of verbs - such as a full verb, auxiliary verb, and modal verb. The following part is relying on the previously explained differentiations of verbs and is attempting to explain several theoretical concepts regarding modal verbs - such as modality and mood. Afterward, the description of the function of different modal verbs is provided together with some examples of a number of specific and rare usages of them. The special focus of this part is given to the modal verb "will". The last part is the research which is concerned with providing an example of how the word "will" is translated to Czech in modal form. In this part, several assumptions made by the Czech linguist Dušková are tested as well as the general functions of "will".

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl vysvětlit, co znamená modalita a související pojmy s se zvláštním zaměřením na sloveso "will" a jeho možné použití v češtině. Nejprve popisuje základní pojmy týkající se sloves a jejich umístění ve větě. Na této jednotlivé části je vybudováno teoretické zázemí, jak přistupovat k analýze různých typů sloves. Úvodní část také stručně vysvětluje rozlišení mezi různými druhy sloves - např. plnovýznamové sloveso, pomocné sloveso a modální sloveso. Následující část se opírá o dříve vysvětlené rozlišení sloves a pokouší se vysvětlit několik teoretických konceptů týkajících se modálních sloves - viz např. jako je modalita a mood. Poté následuje popis funkce jednotlivých modálních sloves spolu s několika příklady specifických modálních sloves a jejich použití. Zvláštní pozornost je v této části věnována modálnímu slovesu "will". Poslední část je vlastní výzkum, který se zabývá uvedením příkladu, jak se slovo "will" převádí do češtiny v modálním tvaru. V této části se zkoumá několik předpokladů, které byly popsány českou lingvistkou Duškovou a jsou testovány i obecné funkce slova "will".
