Battlefields and Sacred Grounds: Examining Women’s Roles and Influences in the White Lotus Rebellion in Mid-Qing China

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá role a zkušenosti žen, které se zúčastnily povstání Bílého lotosu, významného lidového povstání v Číně na konci 18. století. I když obecně převažuje zaměření na mužské účastníky lidových povstání, tato práce se zabývá nedostatečně probádaným narativem účastni žen. Práce dokazuje, že role žen byla klíčová pro povstání, a že se nejedná o pouhé druhořadé aktéry či oběti. Skrze kritické čtení a analýzu primárních zdrojů výzkum odhaluje široký rozsah zapojení žen. A to jak na bitevních polích, tak podpůrných rolích napříč povstaleckými skupinami. Dále, díky výzkumu několika příběhů ženských povstalkyň, jako je Wang Cong’er či Xu rozená Wang osvětluje konkrétní zkušenosti žen v povstání.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the multifaceted roles and experiences of women in the White Lotus Rebellion, a significant peasant revolt in late 18th-century China against the Qing dynasty. Despite the prevailing historiographical focus on male combatants in peasant rebellions, this study delves into the underexamined narrative of female participation, asserting that women were not only peripheral actors or victims but integral to the insurgency. By critical reading and primary sources analysis, this research identifies the scope of women’s involvement in both combat and support roles within the rebel ranks. Furthermore, by exploring several stories of female rebels such as Wang Cong’er or Xu née Wang, this thesis will shed light on particular experiences of the women involved.
