Uneasy Encounters: Christian Churches in Authoritarian Regimes of China and Taiwan

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca skúma spoločenské, politické a kultúrne vyjednávania medzi kresťanskými skupinami a predstaviteľmi autoritárskych čínskych spoločností. V čínskej kultúre je kresťanstvo vnímané ako cudzí náboženský systém, ktorého príchod sa historicky spája s kolonizačnými snahami západných veľmocí. Dokonca aj dnes niektorí Číňania označujú kresťanstvo ako yangjiao 洋教, čo v preklade znamená cudzie náboženstvo. Táto dizertačná práca sa zaoberá pôsobením dvoch vybraných kresťanských skupín; predstavuje dva odlišné prípady – prvým je Presbyteriánska cirkev na Taiwane počas obdobia stanného práva (1949–1987), a druhým sú katolíci zastúpení Čínskym katolíckym vlasteneckým združením v súčasnej Čínskej ľudovej republike (1949 – súčasnosť). Práce skúma nielen nepopisuje len vzťah cirkvi a štátu, ale snaží sa aj poukázať na rôznorodé prostriedky a stratégie, ktorými kresťanské skupiny disponujú pri misiji. Práca hľadá odpoveď na nasledujúcu otázku: Ako sa dve vybrané kresťanské skupiny snažia chrániť a presadzovať svoje záujmy v autoritárskych čínskych spoločnostiach? Hlavným argumentom pritom je, že predstavitelia jednotlivých kresťanských skupín čelia najmenej dvom typom tlaku v autoritatívnom čínskom prostredí – požiadavkám štátneho režimu a spoločenskému, či kultúrnemu tlaku – kedy sa musia snažiť o intencionálnu asimiláciu v danom prostredí. Jedným z hlavných záujmov oboch skúmaných cirkví je vytvoriť úspešnú misiu a stabilné farnosti. Výsledky predkladaného výskumu ukazujú, že pre dosiahnutie svojho cieľa sa obe cirkvi dlhodobo snažia inkulturovať v danej spoločností; to znamená lokalizovať (bendihua 本地化) a vytvoriť spojenie medzi kresťanskou náukou a miestnou kultúrou. Ďalšou súčasťou adaptácie na miestne prostredie je tiež spolupráca s vládou a reagovanie na oficiálnu politiku sinicizácie (zhongguohua 中国化; alebo opätovnej sinicizácie zai zhongguohua 再中國化). Bez štátnej podpory by boli misijné snahy náročne dosiahnuteľné.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the dynamic processes of the various social, political and cultural negotiations that representatives of Christian groups engage in within authoritarian Chinese societies, where Christianity is deemed a foreign religious system brought to China by colonial rulers. Even today, some Chinese refer to Christianity as yangjiao 洋教, a ‘foreign religion’. The thesis explores the political and social cooperation and negotiations of two particular Christian groups in their respective and distinct settings: the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association in the communist People’s Republic on mainland China from 1945 to the present day, and the Presbyterian church of Taiwan in the Republic of China in Taiwan during the period of martial law from 1949 to 1987. Rather than simply confirm the ‘domination-resistance’ model of church-state relations, the thesis focuses on the various approaches adopted by religious groups during the process of negotiation. The main research question is: How have Christian churches attempted to protect and promote their interests in authoritarian Chinese societies? I argue that in an authoritative Chinese environment, religious specialists face two related pressures: the demands of their authoritarian rulers; and social pressure requiring them to assimilate to the local culture. Among the main interests of any church is the desire to create a well-established mission and stable parishes. The thesis clearly shows that to accomplish their objective, churches in China have long endeavoured to practise inculturation, that is, to localise (bendihua 本地化), and to create a link between Christian beliefs and the local culture. One component of such adaptation to the local environment is cooperation with the government by following official state policy on sinicisation (zhongguohua 中国化; or re-sinicisation zai zhongguohua 再中國化). Without state support, it would be almost impossible to establish a visible church in the local community.
