Collective memory and identity in selected works of late Waldensian literature

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá studiem prvků kolektivní paměti a společné historické tradice a jejich recipročním vztahem s kolektivní identitou ve vybraných valdenských textech ze 14.-16. století. Pro tyto potřeby využívá teorii o vlivu postupně konstruované kolektivní paměti a jejím významu na legitimizaci stanovisek a hodnot. Dále pak využívá teoretické koncepty Briana Stocka, který se zaměřuje na mechanismy formování středověkých nonkonformních hnutí, která pak označuje pojmem „textové komunity“. V první řadě tato práce analyzuje, jak valdenští vnímají postavu svého zakladatele Valdèse. Tu se valdenští snaží mnohými způsoby přeznačit tak, aby z ní mohli čerpat více legitimity – Valdès, ač byl jako historická postava laikem, je v jejich vyprávění popsán jako kněz. Jeho příběh nabývá apoštolských rysů – je mu přisouzeno apoštolské jméno Petr, naslouchá evangeliu, které pak i káže, a chodí po Itálii, kde ustanovuje společenství učedníků ne nepodobná společenstvím prvních křesťanů. Na straně druhé je jeho role poněkud upozaďována ve snaze o vykreslení Valdèse nikoli jako zakladatele, nýbrž obnovitele mnohem staršího řádu. V této oblasti se pak valdenští vydávají hlouběji do historie a kořeny svého hnutí se pokoušejí umístit do dob císaře Konstantina, k čemuž využívají notně přeznačenou legendu o papeži Silvestrovi a Konstantinově donaci. V poslední části pak práce sleduje vzpomínky na různé perzekuce ze strany katolické církve. Tyto perzekuce se podepisují na valdenském vnímání světa a sama sebe – ostrakizovaná skupina se od světa odvrací k vnitřnímu náboženskému životu a k očekávání soudného dne.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on elements of collective memory and shared historical tradition and their reciprocal relation with collective identity in selected Waldensian texts from the 14th to the –16th century. For achieving its goals it uses theories dealing with gradually constructed collective memory and its importance in the process of legitimization of standpoints and values. Furthermore, this thesis refers to the theoretical concepts of Brian Stock, who focuses on mechanisms of forming of medieval nonconformist movements, which he calls „textual communities“. In the first place, this thesis analyses how Waldensians perceive the figure of their founder Valdès. In many ways Waldensians try to his role and characteristics so that it provides them more legitimacy; Valdès, although he was historically a layman, is described as a priest in their narrative and his story is remodelled to fit apostolic characteristics: he is given the apostolic name Peter; he listens to the Gospel which he subsequently preaches while travelling around Italy, where he founds congregations similar to those of early Christians. On the other hand his role is diminished in an effort to describe Valdès not as a founder, but as a reformer of a much older order. In this area Waldensians are trying to push the roots of their movement deeper into history, to the times of the emperor Constantine, for which they use a significantly transformed legend about pope Silvester and the Donation of Constantine. In its last part this thesis focuses on memories of various persecutions of Waldensians by the Catholic Church. These persecutions change the Waldensian perception of the world and of their own movement – an ostracized group is turning away from this world towards their inner religious life and towards the expectation of the Judgment day.
