Asssesing discrete traits and morphology of the chest and vertebrae on the postmortem CT

Abstract:

The task of this bachelor's thesis was to record variability in the area of the chest and spine using post-mortem CT records created during a forensic examination in Hradec Králové. In the theoretical part of this work it was found that the chest and spine are sufficiently individual to be able to identify a person. It was found that this variability of the chest and spine is more suitable to observe by computed tomography than directly on the skeletal material. CT records enable repeatability of research, easier sharing of results and mainly a non-invasive method of research, without the risk of irreversible changes on the investigated material. In the practical part of this work it was performed a visual evaluation of the traits on post-mortem CT records using the Avizo program. It was found that almost all traits can be evaluated by appropriate adjustment of the section plane or volume view, with the correct contrast setting for good visibility of the observed traits. Based on the resolution of CT records, traits smaller than 4 mm were excluded from the evaluation due to insufficient visibility. Subsequently, the occurrence of traits in the investigated sample of individuals was recorded and it was found that the variety spina bifida is the most common in the spinal area and the variety fenestratio sterni is the most common in the chest area. In connection with sexual dimorphism, the occurrence of the variety ponticulus atlantis posterior was recorded, which in most cases occurred mainly in case of men. In contrast, the absence of processus xiphoideus of the sternum was recorded only in case of women. Among the traits was noted a correlation between the presence of cleft processus xiphoideus of the sternum and the shape of the chest. By comparing the occurrence of traits of given populations was confirmed interpopulation variability.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zaznamenat variabilitu v oblasti hrudníku a páteře pomocí post-mortem CT záznamů vytvořených v rámci soudně-lékařského vyšetření v Hradci Králové. V teoretické části práce bylo zjištěno, že hrudník a páteř jsou dostatečně individuální, aby mohli sloužit na identifikaci jedince. Bylo zjištěno, že tuto variabilitu hrudníku a páteře je vhodnější pozorovat pomocí výpočtové tomografie než přímo na kostrovém materiálu. CT záznamy umožňují opakovatelnost výzkumu, snazší sdílení výsledků a zejména neinvazivní způsob výzkumu, přičemž nehrozí riziko nevratných změn na zkoumaném materiálu. V praktické části práce proběhlo vizuální hodnocení daných znaků na post-mortem CT záznamech pomocí programu Avizo. Bylo zjištěno, že pomocí vhodného nastavení roviny řezu nebo objemového pohledu je možné hodnotit téměř všechny znaky, přičemž podstatným faktorem pro dobrou viditelnost pozorovaných znaků je správné nastavení kontrastu. Na základě rozlišení CT záznamů byly z důvodu nedostatečné viditelnosti z hodnocení vyřazeny znaky menší než 4 mm. Následně byl zaznamenán výskyt znaků ve zkoumaném vzorků jedinců a bylo zjištěno, že v oblasti páteře se nejčastěji vyskytuje varieta spina bifida a v oblasti hrudníku to je fenestratio sterni. V souvislosti s pohlavním dimorfizmem byl zaznamenán výskyt variety ponticulus atlantis posterior, který se ve většině případů vyskytuje zejména u mužů. Naopak absence mečovitého výběžku hrudní kosti byla zaznamenána jen u žen. Mezi znaky byla dále zaznamenána souvislost výskytu mezi přítomností rozštěpu na mečovitém výběžku hrudní kosti a tvarem hrudníku. Porovnáním výskytu variet u daných populací se potvrdila mezipopulační variabilita.
