The EU's role in the Cyprus conflict

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl zhodnotit přístup Evropské unie ke kyperskému konfliktu v kontextu přistoupení Kypru do EU. Hlavním cílem práce je posoudit, zda se Evropská unie prostřednictvím začlenění Kypru stala mediátorem sjednocovacího procesu. První část práce prezentuje vývoj kyperského konfliktu od jeho příčin až po aktuální stav. Druhá část zkoumá historický vývoj vzájemných vztahů Evropské unie s Kyperskou republikou a analyzuje jednotlivé fáze integračního procesu Kypru. V závěrečné části práce jsou identifikovány politicko-právní a ekonomické dopady, které způsobilo začlenění územně necelistvého ostrova do EU. Zároveň jsou představeny politiky Evropské unie, které byly uplatněny za účelem zmírnění těchto dopadů.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate the European Union's approach to the Cyprus conflict in the context of Cyprus' accession to the EU. The main objective of the thesis is to assess whether the European Union, through Cyprus' integration into the EU, has become a mediator of the reunification process. The first part of the thesis presents the evolution of the Cyprus conflict from its causes to its current state. The second part examines the historical development of the European Union's relations with the Republic of Cyprus and analyses the different stages of the integration process of Cyprus. The final part of the thesis identifies the political, legal and economic impacts caused by the integration of the territorial non-aligned island into the EU. It also presents the European Union policies that have been implemented to mitigate these impacts.
