Identity Theory

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce Teorie identity – Aneb vztah mentálního a materiálního pojednává o relaci mentálních a materiálních entit v kontextu teorie identity jakožto směru filozofie mysli, jenž se utváří v 50. letech minulého století na pozadí prací U. T. Placea, J. J. C. Smarta a H. Feigla. Hlavním tvrzením „identistů“ je teze o totožnosti těla a mysli. Tato teze je v přímém protikladu vůči karteziánskému dualismu, coby prvnímu ucelenému zpracování tohoto problému v západní filozofické tradici. Teorie identity je však pouze jedním z vícero možných monistických řešení. Vedle této teorie se lze setkat s behaviorismem, funkcionalismem a emergentismem. Přičemž ani jedna z těchto teorii se nevyhýbá ostré kritice ze stran svých odpůrců, a ačkoliv se tato práce primárně soustřeďuje na diskuzi o teorii identity jakožto specifickém řešení otázky vztahu těla a mysli, určité argumenty jsou aplikovatelné i na výše zmíněné teorie, a to ať už v jejich prospěch či neprospěch. Samotnou kritiku teorie mysli lze rozdělit na formálně logickou a meritorní. V rámci této práce se zaměřím zejména na logickou kritiku, konkrétně Kripkeho modální argument. Čtenář by tak po přečtení této práce měl získat ucelený přehled o teorii identity, včetně diskuze o její platnosti a měl by ji být schopen zařadit do kontextu filozofie mysli.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis The Identity Theory: Relation of the mental and the material deals with the relation between mental and material entities in the context of the theory of identity as a direction of the philosophy of mind, which was formed in the 1950s on the basis of works of U. T. Place, J. J. C. Smart and H. Feigl. The main statement of the "Identists" is a thesis about the identity of the body and the mind. This thesis is in a direct contradiction to Cartesian dualism, that is to be the first comprehensive processing of the problem in the western philosophical tradition. However, the identity theory is only one of multiple possible monistic solutions. Aside from this theory, one might come across behaviourism, functionalism, and emergentism. Despite not one of these theories being able to avoid sharp criticism from the side of their opponents, and even though this thesis primarily focuses on the discussion about the identity theory as a specific solution to the mind-body problem, certain arguments may be applicable even to the above-mentioned theories, whether in their favour or against them. The very criticism of the mind theory can be split into a formally logic one and a meritory one. In this thesis, I am particularly going to focus on the logical criticism, namely Kripke's modal argument. Reader, upon finishing this thesis, should, therefore, have a good grasp of the identity theory including the discussion about its validity and he/she should be able to categorize it into the context of the philosophy of mind.
