Renaissance skepticism and its role in the development of Early modern thinking.

Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce je renesanční skepticismus a zkoumání jeho vlivu na formování novověkého myšlení. Stěžejním cílem práce je snaha charakterizovat a blíže popsat skepticismus v epoše renesance a na tomto základě zhodnotit vliv, který tento myšlenkový směr měl při konstituování novověkého myšlení. Práce se též zabývá polemikou o vlivu pyrrhónské skepse na filosofické myšlení René Descarta mezi Richardem Popkinem a jeho odpůrci a snaží se představit pokrok v bádání, který v této otázce v posledních desetiletích nastal. V první části je krátce představen antický skepticismus zejména se zřetelem na noetiku a na rozdíl mezi akademickou a pyrrhónskou skepsí. Následující oddíl je zaměřen na zdroje, ze kterých vyrostl renesanční skepticismus a na jeho první představitele. Podrobněji se další část práce věnuje Francisco Sanchesovi, a především Michelovi de Montaigne a rozboru jeho nejslavnějšího skeptického díla, Apologii Raimunda ze Sabundy. Prostor ve třetí části práce je věnován převážně osobě René Descarta a otázce, proč a jak se rozhodl bojovat proti vzniklé všeobecné skeptické krizi. Vzhledem k faktu, že je osobnost historika filosofie Richarda Popkina (1923 - 2005) a především jeho výzkum skepticismu, který uskutečňoval kontinuálně posledních téměř šedesát let, považovaný za zlomový v náhledu na dobu renesanční filosofie, práce se také v poslední části vyjadřuje k tzv. Popkinově tezi tím, že ji podrobně představuje a poukazuje i na některé nové upřesňující výzkumy či oponentní polemiky. Na základě provedené analýzy zdrojů lze sice přijmout tezi o vlivu skepticismu na formování novověkého myšlení, ale je zřejmé, že by bylo patrně vhodné a potřebné ji aktualizovat minimálně o některé nově objevené závěry odborné debaty, které tato práce také popisuje.

Abstract:

The present dissertation is concerned with the philosophy of scepticism. It synthesizes the key historical moments from the birth and the development of the sceptical view of the world to its role in influencing philosophical thinking throughout the various stages of human history. The discussed historical periods include: the important period of the French Renaissance, which produced the work of perhaps the most significant and influential Renaissance sceptic Michel de Montaigne and the period of early modern philosophy, which is forever connected with the work of René Descartes. The main goal is to characterize the specific features and the impact of sceptical attitudes on the subsequent development of the philosophical notion and interpretation of the world. The text has been also created in order to contribute to the debate on the birth of "the new cartesian world view" in the 17th century. Finally, the work has been made to reconsider views of Richard Popkin and to show the progress of the topic in last years, because papers and monographs published in the Czech language sadly lack academic sources that would sufficiently analyse and acknowledge sceptical's legacy to philosophy and its impact on the future. The first part is the introduction. The second part is devoted to the issue of Renaissance scepticism and Michel de Montaigne. Possibly thanks to the new Latin translation of the works of Sextus Empiricus, Montaigne was able to revive a long-forgotten interest in the fundamental beliefs and principles of scepticism. The third part of the work shows how the rediscovery of scepticism had contributed to the breakdown of la crise pyrrhonienne and its influence on traditional philosophy. Relatively soon afterwards, no one else than Descartes drew on Montaigne's intellectual heritage and opened a new gateway to scientific contemplations. The link between the philosophical foundations of scepticism and the Cartesian world, as presented in the current dissertation, has been analysed in the fourth part of the work. In the context of modern times, the fresh insight resulting from the review undertaken establishes some aspects of sceptical philosophical thinking as considerably more progressive and more influential than were attributed to it in the past. The aim of this work is to show that Renaissance scepticism as presented by Popkin cannot be considered as the one and only base for forming modernity even that his interpretation of European intellectual history of the period remains valuable and so far valid.
